it seems to me we have 4 or 5 types of steels to choose from when im looking around for my next knife; and of all things concidered its appears that vg-10 is the best all around steel, or am i just looney? opinions please.

Well, there are certainly far more than 4-5 steels from which to choose, and while VG-10 is held in high regard by many people (though I have no personal experience with it), saying any one steel is the "best all around" is a dubious assertion.

depends on what you want it for. Pretty blade? or workhorse ? Cut paper or highway overpasses?! :)

I like BG-42 a lot and am not fond of S30V. but thats just me. VG10 is known for the ability to get scary sharp!

Just my opinion but these are my 5 favorites each one for different reasons:

S30V
154CM
D2
BM-42
VG-10

I actually like the "lower end" steels like Buck's 420HC, AUS8, 12C27, 440A. I don't often abuse my EDC but once or twice a year I'm travelling light and have to use it for something it really wasn't intended for. I put tiny chips on my S30V Native that way. I'd rather sharpen more often but have a more forgiving steel. I like carbon steels for that reason. It's also easier to reprofile the lower end stainless steels. YMMV

I like D2 (semi-stainless) a lot more than VG-10, but VG-10 is good stuff. On par with S30V, IMO (though I like S30V a little more).

VG-10 is a high hardness, high wear resistant steel. One of the reasons it is well liked is simply because it is used extensively by Fallkniven and especially Spyderco who put a significant amount of effort into properly shaping the edges on the knives so as to provide a high initial sharpness and cutting ability.
