Hello all, I am an amatuer knife maker, I am working on a couple projects at once and will post pictures when they are done, it will be a pair of throwing instruments, one tomahawk and one throwing knife, both 3/8" 4140 parkerized with cord wrapped handles,
Anway, my question was where is the best place to buy steel stamps for putting my initials on them? where do you guys shop for off the shelf or custom stamps, and should I really worry about stressing the blades with sharp stamps enought to consider rounded? on this application the handles are overly thick for weight, so that's not a problem, but down the road I would like to take on some smaller projects.
any input would be great, I look forward to posting more often when I get the hang of things.

Welcome to ShopTalk, Jon!

I recommend Henry Evers for stamps. They'll cost ya, though. A normal stamp in a common font will run you about $140. That's not bad, because you'll get it in about a week. Harper's out of Las Vegas (?) will undercut Everstamp's prices by about $20, but their backlog is six-weeks. Then there is a company called MicroStamp, which I have not dealt with.

I prefer stamps, other makers prefer etching.

You can make your own. There is a tutorial for making a maker's-mark type of stamp on the Primal Fires board. It's a bit more primitive, but gets the job done.

I've bought both of mine from Harper's and they're great. Higgy got it right about price and wait time. Harper's, and I suppose anyone, will also work from your original art to make your stamp; you don't have to just use standard letters. You can't get detail like an etched mark however, and the stamped area is much smaller. I stamp mine more out of tradition than any notion of what's stronger or whatever.

Welcome and looking forward to seeing your work! Who among us hasn't grown up throwing anything that would stick in anything else? ;)

Welcome, if you just want individual letters like I did (I got two stamps) you can purchase them from Jantz Supply. I've been two lazy and cheap to get a personalized stamp :D
