While watching Stan Wilson work, flip~down magnifying glasses in place, one sees an interesting blend of artistry and engineering, of true involvement in the art of knifemaking...with a touch of "schoolboy with a switchblade" giddiness thrown in ... the end result though, is impressive indeed.
I've been fortunate enough to be involved in several pieces with Stan. It is interesting to see a product develop from the ground up; evolving through stages of 'prototype testing'. Even more fortunate to witness pieces of *this* quality come to fruition. . .
The goal of this project is an EDC one can be proud of. Stan's latest is a button release D/A leaf-spring auto; 4 inch stainless damascus blade with matching bolsters, 9.25 inch OAL, mammoth tooth scales and titanium liners.
The fit and finish is, as expected from Stan, perfect. The filework is subtle and classic in the genre of Kious, Osbourne and Smith. And as with the top-rung makers, the line between the backspacer and blade is indeed hard to ascertain.
Every detail has been considered. Look how closely the scales have been matched on both sides...
Even the pocket clip has been considered as an integral part of the whole...note the graceful curve to follow the shape of the handle. But in this feat of engineering the basics have not been overlooked... the blade grind is a work of art in itself! A perfect taper to the screamin' sharp edge.
Please also note that this knife, though lacking any bolts or screws, is not pinned!
There is not a visible screw, pin, bolt, etc anywhere on this knife. I was fortunate enough to watch Stan disassemble this knife using a series of homemade tools, inserted into the blade channel to rotate pins, at which point scales came off, handles pivoted and cam joints released and voila, the knife was in pieces! Even more amazing in that when assembled this is one of the sturdiest~feeling knives I've ever had in hand
AND the knife is a D/A auto with a beautiful kick! It is a button release...see the button? Indeed, it is that circle right in the center of the bolster, barely detectable by a slight change in the damascus pattern. . .
Here's a group shot, including the first Wilson acquired
And a group shot of some filework
so I think my EDC rotation is covered for awhile...
Once again, sorry for the crappy pics, just wanted to show off my three favorite carries (and one safe queen)
