While watching Stan Wilson work, flip~down magnifying glasses in place, one sees an interesting blend of artistry and engineering, of true involvement in the art of knifemaking...with a touch of "schoolboy with a switchblade" giddiness thrown in ... the end result though, is impressive indeed.

I've been fortunate enough to be involved in several pieces with Stan. It is interesting to see a product develop from the ground up; evolving through stages of 'prototype testing'. Even more fortunate to witness pieces of *this* quality come to fruition. . .

The goal of this project is an EDC one can be proud of. Stan's latest is a button release D/A leaf-spring auto; 4 inch stainless damascus blade with matching bolsters, 9.25 inch OAL, mammoth tooth scales and titanium liners.

The fit and finish is, as expected from Stan, perfect. The filework is subtle and classic in the genre of Kious, Osbourne and Smith. And as with the top-rung makers, the line between the backspacer and blade is indeed hard to ascertain.

Every detail has been considered. Look how closely the scales have been matched on both sides...

Even the pocket clip has been considered as an integral part of the whole...note the graceful curve to follow the shape of the handle. But in this feat of engineering the basics have not been overlooked... the blade grind is a work of art in itself! A perfect taper to the screamin' sharp edge.

Please also note that this knife, though lacking any bolts or screws, is not pinned!

There is not a visible screw, pin, bolt, etc anywhere on this knife. I was fortunate enough to watch Stan disassemble this knife using a series of homemade tools, inserted into the blade channel to rotate pins, at which point scales came off, handles pivoted and cam joints released and voila, the knife was in pieces! Even more amazing in that when assembled this is one of the sturdiest~feeling knives I've ever had in hand

AND the knife is a D/A auto with a beautiful kick! It is a button release...see the button? Indeed, it is that circle right in the center of the bolster, barely detectable by a slight change in the damascus pattern. . .

Here's a group shot, including the first Wilson acquired

so I think my EDC rotation is covered for awhile...

Once again, sorry for the crappy pics, just wanted to show off my three favorite carries (and one safe queen)

Congrats. That looks like a fine knife! The quality looks excellent as always. That's definitely my favorite of your four. Are you really gonna carry it?

Is that D. Thomas's steel on this?

BTW- just because they aren't pro pics doesn't make them crappy. They show the knife well.

I am with Keith on this the knife is Killer and the tooth is the best I have seen.

sure, it is beautiful and artfully designed, but what an engineering marvel!
No visible fasteners, an invisible auto opening button...it boggles my mind how he put that thing together:eek:. Brilliant.

I would love to see a blow-apart photo of that knife.

Another incredible knife from Stan. Michael, you have a MOST envious collection shown.

I'm lovin' it!® ;)

Stop your durn apologizing for the photos. They are better than 95% of the rest of the images shown here, including some of mine. ;) Maybe it's the subject....

Thanks guys, I hope to have several pics of a friends Wilsons up soon... also beautiful knives!

Are you really gonna carry it?

Is that D. Thomas's steel on this?

Jonathan, I've carried it every day since procuring it in mid Dec...certainly worth more caressing the thigh than stashed in some drawer ;) :D

And yes, that is Devin's stainless damascus... specifically to take the worry out of using~>washing/wiping~>into the pocket not as dry as it should be...

Hell Coop, you're the main reason some of us try so freaking hard!

Here's a couple links from other Wilson knives:

In 2005, Stan Wilson made a beautiful "Advisor" and displayed
it in the making in my book on Custom Knifemaking.

Here are two pictures of Stan from his section in the book.

All the best,

David. I was just drooling over a photo of that same Wilson knife earlier today after I read this post. Thanks for posting it. That knife is absolutely amazing and some of the best ivory is there.

Michael, great score and thats so cool that your using it. I bet its so much fun to play with and you cant put it down. I do that constantly with my pocket knife. One thing though is I prefer Mike Norris to Devon's steel so i'd pick Norris if it were me. Spectacular peice though!

Great pictures Michael and the knives are exceptional.

As good as Stan Wilson's knives look, handling them is even MORE impressive.

When I stopped at his table this year at Blade, there were two knives there. Handling each one was just amazing. They could NOT have been any smoother or finely made in my opinion. Stan was a pleasure to chat with as well.

Congratulations.

Peter

Wow, what an exquisite knife. It is simply amazing that there are no visible pins. That Mammoth tooth is the most beautiful that I have seen on any knife!! CONGRATS!!
