As some of you may know there has been a contest going on. We now have a winner. First of all let me say this was not a test for the casual collector on a scale of 10 this question was a 10 plus. After posting it I really felt we would not get a winner. The difficulty was obvious in that there were very few entrys. However the people who did enter were certainly determined. There were two outstanding entrys. By now you might have guessed Texas T Pick ( Phil ) and UHFan ( Deb).

The winner was UH Fan and I am awarding a second place ( another hat ) to Texas T. I am now going to post all these companies and a little bit about them ( from memory so if I goof up don't pounce but I am not going to look all these up to be exact ). NOTE One of the things that made this so tough is that there were a lot of contract knives made for various companies by local manufactorers. Some of these were sent, they are a grey area and in some cases are applicable in some not also it would be impossible to give a full list of them all but for the ones sent I will attempt to put them where they belong. This Damn answer is as tough as the question. This is in the order they were listed so here goes. Oh one more thing this answer is cursory in that it is impossible to give a complete history of each company but if you are curious look them up and if you find that I made a mistake. GUESS WHAT don't tell me, hell this contest was only a spur of the moment thing I do not want to make it my lifes work. Here goes

Allen Cutlery Co Newburgh NY the only knife company ever from Newburgh, Catskill Knife company ( a red herring should not be listed was made in NYC and given a local name, like the Cornwall in the question example.) Cooperative Knife Co ( Supposed First name and tang given to Ellenville Knife then Ulster Knife CO by the original workers who split from Walden knife to form the new company. Ulster Knife Co, (Ellenville.) Walden knife CO, (Walden Walden Knife works (Walden.) same. Schrade Cut Co ( Walden Ellenville ). Schrade Walden Cut Corp ( Ellenville ) . Imperial ( original Prov RI then Ellenville ). Press Button Knife Corp ( Walden Knife Walden ). Napanoch ( Napanoch 3 miles from Ellenville ). Grahamsville in business for one year 10 miles up the road from Naponoch. Dwight Divine & Sons ( Ulster Ellenville ). Kingston ( Kingston NY Div of Ulster ). D & S Ultra Rare made for short period on machinery from Walden knife ( Walden). Ellenville Knife Co ( First real name of Ulster knife ( Ellenville ) . Electric Knife Co. Made be New York Knife made in Walden and the Newark NJ. OVB, HibSpeBar ( Hibbard Spencer and Bartlett, Black Diamond. Ajax, Hibbard, John Primble, All contracts made by Schrade or Ulster ( Ellenville ). Uncle Henry, ( Ellenville Schrade ). Honk Falls ( Napanoch ). Imperial (Ellenville). I XL Schrade for 4 years 76 till 80 Ellenville. Hammer New York knife Walden then Ellenville under the Ulster conglomerate . Schrade Wostenholm ( same as IXL ) . Rodgers Under the same IXL grouping (Ellenville). Keen Cutlery Co. Made by Napanoch first, then Walden Knife ( Keen Kutter ) then Schrade ( Walden and Ellenville ). Wallkill River Works ( New York Knife Walden ) cheap line that helped bankrupt New York Knife. Shapleigh Hdwe and variations ( Contract made by Walden knife then Schrade ( Walden and Ellenville ). Remington Napanoch originally then bought out Napanoch and move away however contracts made by Walden and Schrade now made by camillous. Parker Frost ( Schrade ) .
Sears Roebuck Schrade and Ulster (Ellenville). Kon Kav ( Schrade Ellenville ). Russel R & Arrow ( Schrade ). A G Russell Schrade (Ellenville.) Warwick Knife, Tied up witH New York Knife ( might also have been made in Warwick ). Orange Cut Co. In business for on year made knives on machinery acquired from Walden knife when it closed by employees trying to make a go of it ( Walden) in a garage ( which is still there today there are not knives in oit I have looked ). Nagle Reblade Poughkeepsie NY Kipsi Kut Poughkeepsie NY.Co O knife company ( I believe was the same as Orange.). New York knife Mattewan NY now called Beacon then Walden. Wardlow original English then made by New York Knive perhapes when the Tarriffs made English knives to expensive. For whatever reason they were also made in Walden.

OK this is most of them and In fact I may have missed a name that was sent however I do not care. I am done. Phil send me an address for your Hat, Debbie Congrats No doubt win lose or draw no matter if these Macho boys like it or not you are definitely one of the sheriffs of this out fit. Well done.

This is the vast majority of these companies each one fits into the overall answer of this history so now that you have the names, again if you have an interest you might want to look them up and see how they inter relate. Then you can write back and tell me the mistakes I made which is always fun.

You can bet the next test will be a bit simplier. One more thing I noticed a posting regarding the various possible patterns which people find most desirious and would want regarding the new Walden Knife company. It would be great if those with an interest would submit what they would like to see so that some input could be given to the people at the new company. I have been up there a couple of times and chances are will be there a bit more. It would be great if we have a volunteer (LARRY Where are you ). to compile the information. Pattern materials ect. You people have been complaining so this is a new ball game make your opinions known or learn to talk Chinese. Once again Congrat to the winners. I hope some of you might have found it interesting. LT

Congrats to Debbie and Phil for their wonderful win.
LT is correct that it was a 10+ level test.

You two can post pictures with your hats. I can't. There are a couple of pictures at the post office that would kind of resemble me.

LT wants me to volunteer to collect and present a collection of favorite patterns materials etc. As a previous winner I will gladly do so.

It might be easier if you e-mailed me your wants likes and dislikes I'll compile a list and post it at least once a week.
How the presentation will happen LT and I can work out.

We can all air our interests on the board as well.

So Send em to:

Here is the start of my list.

I want a 123OT Pioneer (carbon blade) with a real red bone handle. And a MOP version would be real nice too.

Lets get moving on this, the earlier we have some data the better chance we might have.

Thanks guys. Too bad they don't have one of those smiley faces with long hair taking a bow. This one was really tough, but I didn't get it because of knowledge, I won it because I'm a good reader. Took some digging and a lot of time, but it was really interesting. I learned a lot doing it. LT, thanks for the opportunity to learn some more. Debbie

Thank you, LT. It was fun. Educational. Intriguing some of the ups and downs and sideways turns those old companies took while making knives and knife history.

Debbie Congrats to you. We had some cowboy here a couple of years ago, and LT suggested he email you at Schrade in regards to a question he had. He came back with something silly about "A chick who knows about knives... no way!". Always ready to jump to the defence of a lovely lady from Ellenville, and unable due to ridiculous laws concerning dueling to settle the matter with honour and finality, I merely set the macho bad boy in his place with a scathing post in which I named a few of the woman involved in Knife collecting. Of course you, Ms Chase, was listed, along with Mrs. D Ferguson, and the 'knife princess' herself-- Cindy Rabb, Betty (Mrs. Houston C) Price, Mrs. AG Russell, and many others.

Phil

ps.. and for my suggestion, what else! A 5 1/2 or 6" texas toothpick handled in Mother of Pearl (pinned-- not glued on!) with a 'Crest' or Bomb shield. Threaded bolsters would be nice. Packaged in a hardwood box, lined with pillow satin in royal blue. NO CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY! Let's see some knives that can stand on their own!

Wow...thank you soooo much. (blush blush) I would never have imagined myself being included in the company of such knowledgeable knife people. I just always considered myself very lucky and honored to have been instructed under the highly reputable and experienced supervision of Dave Swinden. Definitely an amazing man to whom I owe everything that I know today about Schrade knives and their history.
