I promised to give my first impressions of the new model 55 from Buck. It is an honest-to-goodness mini-110 in spite of the radius look chosen for the inlay/bolster joints. The only one I have opened (out of 10) has Buck's usual shaving sharp edge. I really like the clip blade in this size but I am not sure I care for the large handle rivets. They are approx. 1/8 inch in diameter and seem oversized for the knife. This model will become the everyday carry choice for many 110 lovers. It is small enough to be used without drawing undue attention from anti-knife people while still retaining enough 110 features to make it a desirable choice to carry and USE.
Lock-up and release are typical Buck solid. The knife is begging for customized inlays and I can envision stag, giraffe bone, mastodon, water buffalo, jigged bone, smooth bone and so forth replacing the standard obeechee wood. The standard inlays do look just fine. I am just letting my imagination run amok! I expect the limited edition model with nickel silver frame and ironwood inlays to also be very popular in spite the extra cost.
The knife is sized very close to a model 503 but the brass frame and clipblade really do make it a mini-110. At the price point Buck chose, this should be a hot selling knife. Hope this covers most questions.
