Standoffs give you a more open construction whereas a backspacer (even integrals) more rigid construction and extra jimping. I'm sure there are other pros and cons.

I'm sure for some it doesn't make much of a difference.

Here's Spyderco Techno which comes with a backspacer and also with after-market standoffs.

I dont mind either one, but still prefer standoffs. Mainly because its easier to clean and most of the time i like how they look more.

I have to agree but, I think it really depends upon the knife, how it will be used, and what offers the most comfort.

I went with standoffs only for the ease of cleaning. My work knives get filthy even just being in my pocket.

That said...I don't mind the partial backspacer on my Military.

Standoffs -- they look great, weigh less and let you see more of your knife.

Backspacer for me. It lets you use the butt of your knife as a hammer better. Also standoffs while easier to clean are not that much easier to clean. The backspacers also protect the edge of the blade better from keys or coins that may be loose in the pocket with your knife.

The biggest thing though is the hammer thing. My CQC7 with a backspacer is perfect for crushing whole black peppercorns.

I mostly prefer the clean looks of the standoffs but in some cases, depending on the utility, prefer the backspacer albeit mostly for the added jimping.

One interesting backspacer is the fairly new Hinderer Modular Backspacer System which gives your folder various functionality.

I usually prefer standoffs
Mainly because it catch less dirty and or easier to clean
But depending on designs and use spacers don't bother me much
At the end IMHO for a basic EDC use it is more a question of preferences and design than real functional use ;)

No preference for me. I like cool looking back spacers on some knives, as long as they don't make knives too heavy. For example, the decorative carved backspacers and the like. Or the pattern continuing from the scale around the back of the handle on the LionSteel TiSpine, or the carved pattern continuing on this customized CFK SSE that I'm currently fascinated with:

I like them both but thought this job done by Sal manaro I believe years ago was pretty cool, and you can smash stuff with it if need be or in a bind. I don't think you could do that with standoffs. Yes I've even used it to tenderize a nice piece of meat before also. :D

I'm not super partial to this aspect of folders. What I DO prefer is a female threaded pin/nut/"Chicago screw" type construction. ...as seen on the Sebenza 21 and Hinderer XM-18. I guess a "shouldered" standoff/barrel spacer would come next. IMO the ultimate design here is the Strider SnG/SmF/PT integral backspacer.

If I saw 2 of the same model, and I loved the model, one with back spacer and one with stand offs??? I'm choosing the back spacer.
I just think it makes for a more solid feeling knife. Probably just in my head though.

I love polls!! :D More polls please!

I voted standoffs. It's easier to clean out the knife that way and I think it looks better on most knives.

I like standoffs a little more but not to the point where it will sway my decision on a knife I like.
