Today I bought a Stanley H122 half hatchet at the flea market. It has a black paint on the head that covers everything, even the hammer face and the top of the eye. The only thing not covered is the edge. I want to know if this is a homemade paint job or not. Also, the paint is obviously covering some pitting and imperfections, leading me to believe that it was done by the seller. Sorry for no pics, I cant find or afford any SD cards right now.

Well it's kinda hard to make any judgment without seeing it. My guess is that the paint was applied by the guy at the flea market. But before you go hog wild on removing it you might consider that underneath the paint and rust may lie a very nice patina that's worth saving. A wire wheel can remove the paint and rust while saving the patina.

Those Stanleys are pretty common. The logo design with the h122 came in a couple different patterns.

There was a nice patina, and i used a wire wheel to get to it. The only problem is the stock bevels have this "micro" bevel that is so thick, that it wont cut or chop anything. Thanks for the help.

Sounds like you have some profiling to do with a file. I'd love to see pics of it with the paint removed.

I haven't stained the handle yet, btw.

It looks great. I see what you mean about the micro bevel, it's visible in that top down photo. Doesn't look so bad that a file couldn't fix it. I bet it's hard steel, though, so you'll need a fresh file.

Thanks for the pics.

That's not the micro bevel that was on there, it's the one I put on, the pics make it look worse than it is it. The angle was about 60-65 degrees. Now I have a better bevel, that has file marks on the very uneven faces, no sort of polish, and really looks like crap; but it sort of works. I have never sharpened an axe or tommy before, so I hope this is as bad as it gets :o. The steel was a pain, and I had to unclog double cut bastard Arcade often.
