I purchased a new old stock Kabar USMC with a receipt dated 12/1992. I noticed that the sheath has staples rather than rivets. Is one better or more desirable than the other? Why would Kabar switch to rivets later in the decade? Thanks

The rivets hold up better than the staples. We use some of the stapled sheaths in our historical videos and with a little use you can really see the difference. There has only been minor changes to the 1219C2 (today the 1217 USMC Fighting/Utility knife), but the changes that have been made have only been to improve.

Thank you OKB, I was curious about how they hold up.

OKB - The OCD in me wants to know why Kabar did not assign the model number 1219 rather than 1217 to it? :D

I wish Kabar had their leather sheaths fabricated to the same specs as the USGI sheath. The Mexican leather is too thin and the single non-leather welt is cheap IMO. I understand the cost concerns so realize that is not an option. Love the quality of the knife though.

Collecting knives with poor quality/condition or missing sheaths is what got me into leather crafting to start with. When I make one for a 1219C2/Mk2 or Mk1, I just try to follow what the originals looked like to the best of my ability, :D but without rivets or staples since I can't seem to find suitable rivets or a sturdier enough stapler. :(

If you don't already have this resource, you might find it valuable. Its the Government Specs for manufacturing the: SHEATH, FOR COMBAT KNIFE, aka, the kabar sheath. :)
