Hey, this is my first straight razor. I've been looking at them for a while. Can anybody help figure out anything about this one. I was just recently at SMKW and there was an antique straight razor booth in the front. I paid $25 for this one. Was i ripped off or is it an ok buy. There are no numbers on the blade. On the tang it says: Devon MFG.CO. Germany. Can anybody help me identify things like age or steel.
All help is appreciated much. Thanks

Can't help you much on the maker, or more likely importer, but appears to be early 20th century and in very reasonabl condition. A slight bit of hone wear near the toe is common, and a crack at the pivot pin on the scale is common too. I would have given that price for it, you didn't get ripped off.

Now, what do you want to do with it? Shave or display? It won't need much work to be save ready, but a honing will cost you about $20 plus shipping. All in all, good razor, should service you well.

Razor sharp and shave ready are two different things. A dull razor will still cut hair, and unless the seller sold it as properly honed and shave ready I wouldn't consider it so. Even then I would still be sure to test it. Larry at The whipped Dog does great work and has fast turn around times. He also sells all the honing and strops you need to maintain that edge. I would get it honed professionally and start your education backwards. Learn to strop the edge back, then learn to touch up and then learn to hone and set bevels.
