We probably all do this. I like to sight down the blade point-first on any new knife I get. If that point is perfectly placed you'll know the blade is straight and you can also see how well they ground it on each side.
Of course there's not much impact on how well the knife works even if it's not perfect but on ones that cost a big chunk of change they'd better be pretty good...
Anyway, here are the results of some of mine:
A.G. Russell Strike Force: Top swedge is a little slanted from right going left to hit the center. A bit surprising since it looks like it was made in the same factory as the SERE 2000.
AMK SERE 2000: perfect
Benchmade 806D2: One side on the top swedge is a little uneven - i.e. scooped out a bit more on the left than the right.
Bucks (110's/112/500/560): All perfect. You gotta hand it to Buck turning out knives like this at the price point they sell for.
Dozier Straight Personal: perfect
Dozier Yukon Pro Skinner: perfect
Krein TK-8: perfect
MT Amphibian: perfect
MT LCC: perfect
Spyderco Military: perfect
Spyderco Lum Chinese: perfect
Not too bad overall, I'd expect the not-exactly-cheap handmades to be perfect anyway. (But I just can't get over how a normal human being like Bob Dozier and Tom Krein can take an ugly piece of steel and some handle material and somehow turn it into a great knife.)
