Starmate combo or plain edge?

Well I've decided to get a starmate. Now all that is left is to choose which edge. For general outdoor and work use should I choose the combo edge or the plain edge? Are there any advantages to either?

Thanks

For general outdoors use, I would choose the plain edge, as I did when I bought mine. If you feel that you might need serrations on occassion, buy a Delica or Endura in serrations, but the general use knfe is best in plain edge form.

Definately plain edge. I too would get a delica or endura or a Military if I wanted serrations.

This is really a personally decision. For me, I hate serrated knives and hate combo edges even more. For combo edges for a folder of this size might be OK, but I prefer smaller knives and on smaller knives combo edges really dont work that great.

I just ordered a plain edge today! A combo edge, IMHO, is more difficult to maintain in the field if you don't have the right equipment (e.g., Spyderco Sharpmaker).

I would recommend the plain edge for its ease of sharpening. The 440V blade is so scary sharp that you will not miss a 1 1/2 section of serated edge.

I've got a plain edge Starmate and love it. I carry the Starmate, and a serr. Endura at the same time, or a SAK with a saw blade. That
seems to cover just about all the cutting bases at once. As regards sharpening in the field I recommend the Gatco Tri-Seps ceramic
sharpener, small , handy, works well until I can get home to my Sharpmaker.

I had the same prob. I took both.

I carry the plain edge.
But if I had to cut rope and stuff like that I'll consider to carry the combo-edge (if you don't carry two knives). When I carry two knives my second is a SAK Rucksack with a wood-saw.

I picked up a used/like new Starmate from one of the guys here with a plain edge.

Very nice knife and the 440V is sweet! IMHO, I would go PLAIN for the Starmate.

If you want an all serrated knife, look into the Merlin or Harpy with the hawkbill style blade. Mike Sastre turned me on to them, and the Harpy replace my Delica. Check them out

. A Matriarch would be nice, too!

I don't have a Starmate, YET, but when I get one I will go with the plain edge.
Easier to maintain and IMHO, a larger variety of uses.

It looks like I am in the minority, but if you only going to carry one knife. Get the combo. The serrations will come in handy when you need to rip through times when you are out doors. It seemed like I had to resharpen my knives every few weeks when I had the plain edge. So I carry a combo and it seems that I have to resharpen the knife twice a year.

I picked up a plain edge and you will not be sorry.
Use a second knife for serrations.

I ordered a plain edge Starmate from a certain knife company on the net. At the time they only had a plain edge one. I took it, but the knife never came. I called said company, and they couldn't track it. They told me they were getting some new ones in that day in the serrated mode and could send one out. I told them to go ahead and send one. I hope I won't be disappointed. I do like the partially serrated knife. Mainly if it is a relatively large blade.
