The Starmate is one of my favorite Spydercos and one of my favorite production folders overall as well. Great blade shape, good steel and cuts like the dickens. While the combo-edge is OK, I still wish I had a plainedge (picked up through a trade so it will have to do :( ). I just have more use for a good plain edge than the combo. About the only quibble I have with the knife is that it is not as smooth nor stout as my Wegner (few knives are). You will see some disagreement regarding handle comfort. I find it fits my hand perfectly in a variety of grips and carries very well for it's size. This knife actually has the honor of being my "chore knife" and general working folder. It's light weight, full size blade and good cutting performance all make it perfect for this role.

I agree with Blademan. Great knife and the 440V is a super cutter. I have a plainedge version and carry this knife just about everyday. It is slim enough for in the pants carry, so I can carry it even when dressed up a bit (not in jeans). I really like this knife. I think they are on the discontinue list, I may have to find a spare.

I typically refer to my Starmate as my ugly duckling knife. It's overall appearance to me is boring at best, and homely at worst. But...pretty is as pretty does I guess, and that knife is one heck of a good one. It fits my large forepaws really well, has a good strong point, a thick spine, holds an awesome edge, and inspite of what I thought of as a rather thin liner-lock, it's actually got one of the best lock ups of ANY liner lock I've owned. It's also very light, and a pleasure to carry every day. So, inspite of aesthetics, It's one of my all time favorites.

I have had a plain edged model since they first came out and it is my favorite knife. I may carry others now and then, but it is my choice to carry whenever I may do so legally. The problem is that I work in Washington, DC, where the blade limit is 3", so it is illegal there. But I have carried it elsewhere, day in and day out, and have frequently said that I consider it to be a better choice than the Sebenzas that I have seen at roughly 1/3 to 1/4 the price. The finish detailing may not be quite up to that on the Sebenza, but the steel in the blade is much better, it is every bit as smooth, and I have found the lock to be every bit as good as that on friend's Sebenzas.

I have a matching finger cutout on the back side, and textured lock area on the liner. I don't consider these improvements, rather they are corrections to make the knife as it should be.

well i got the starmate today, and like the style, etc BUT the blade has VERY visible grind lines on the blade - on a couple of places (an " long i bet) ya can feel ridges when ya run your thumb nail across it - i know this isnt right - its almost like it missed the last polishing process - any of your starmates look like this?? i guess "back to spydie" huh??

My blade also has very visible grind lines which does not lend itself to a very favorable first impression. The finish looks uneven. In all honesty, I guess I really haven't even thought about it since I first got the knife until now. I just sort of accepted it as part of the knife. Use this knife for awhile and I am certain you will forget about the lines. On the plus side, it actually seems to have some sort of ability to hide scratches :D

I'm considering trading my Camillus EDC in 154CM (NIB) for a slightly carried Starmate...do you guys think it's a good trade?

hey neetones, jump on that trade imho - i really like the starmate design, it features very positive lockup/light weight/good sized blade - imho a great knife, and if the grindlines are a common thing i can live w/it - worked on it a few minutes w/my spydie ceramic stone and its scary sharp - i am seriously considering using it as a back up to my emerson commandr/vrawford kasper ti fighter, it really carries well, a lotta knife in the size /weight dept - anyway i think it is lots neater more functional than a cammilus EDC, a good knife in its own right, for the $$, but not in the same league, imho, as a starmate, a high end spydie - also look at the lum tanto, its very similar, and i compared the starmate to a wegner at a BM store, and it was close but liked the starmate better - might have to get a weg though, another nice one i ho
