Just got my Starmate today -
IT WOBBLES THE EXACT SAME WAY as mr44's...
http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum52/HTML/000091.html

Hmmm...time to take a look at the QC on the Starmate assembly line eh?

I am asking the seller to send me a PostPaid Envelope/mailer so I can exchange it with them.

I would rather repair the knife myself - but only if I was told exactly how and had Mr. Glesser's
blessing (ie - warranty still intact)

If not, I guess it is going to be another week before I enjoy my Starmate...

BTW - I have plain edge Starmate that is serial # (not a user piece) that locks up sooooo nice
and tight!! (So I KNOW what wobble IS).

I am going to post this under it's own topic too...

Since the Starmate uses the eccentric pivot pin device, I don't believe the pin can be adjusted w/out Spyderco's intervention. I would avoide doing any adjustments to teh pivot pin on the Starmate, as you may put the pin out of alignment. I have an early Starmate which had a lock that exhibited the movement you described. Afetr a few snappy openings, the lock seated, and locks-up perfect...

Yeah,
I tried several times to snap n seat but no luck...

Good news is that the company I got it from is going to make things right.

I need to say that this is the first Spyderco that I have seen this type of pivot play in.
All the others have been reasonably solid.

Just got back in town, I will let the people in Q.C. know that this is happening and it will get fixed.
Sorry for the problems, if I can help at all feel free to contact me.
Have a great day.

JoeG26er,

Do you happen to remember if the Starmate's swedge was ground off center? I recently acquired a Starmate in a trade based primarly off of the Military's and Starmate's excellent reputation (I believe they share the same lock geometery or cockpit). Anyway, first thing I noticed was that the swedge was ground off center. Not a big deal although it is a little dissapointing.

Then, while using it to whittle cross-grain on some pressure treated 1x4's (don't ask) I noticed the same vertical blade play that you mentioned. I'd never even thought to look for it before... I started examining the lock a little more and found that if I tried to close it like a slipjoint (without unlocking it) the liner actually travelled about a 1/16" across the tang, thereby producing the blade play.

The reason I ask about the swedge is that I'm wondering if these were part of the same batch (mine has a polished stainless clip).

I don't have any clue what the previous owner did to this knife - he claimed it was NIB but by the condition of the blade it clearly wasn't. I knew I should've returned it...

Jon - Since you don't know what the previous owner did, you may want to send it in to us, assuming it's a problem. Usually when we run into something like this, someone has taken it apart and doesn't know how to put it back together.

Sal,

Thanks, that's what I'm going to do. I spoke with Mike(?) Hayes in the warranty department and he said to just send it right in.

You guys rock!

Ghecko,

I can vouch for Spyderco's warranty service. They do a good job. Mine wobbled up and down a lot, but not anymore! Sure, it really, truly sucked to have to send my Starmate in, wait a long time, and then get dinged for customs and taxes on the way back across the border, but mine came back to with the tightest lockup out of all the folders I currently own. It is perfectly adjusted: the liner engages just enough of the tang to lock up, leaving the whole tang thickness for it to wear across over time. (I bet it will take a LONG time to do so, however!)
