Starmate/Military handling

Hi all.

My first post in this forum I beleive.
I'm interested in getting a Starmate. It looks to me like it would handle and open like a Military. I love the feel of the Military, and the Starmate looks like it would feel similar in the hand. Any feedback?

Thanks!

Kallisti.

Kallisti, the Starmate has a straighter handle and not as broad a blade, is slightly shorter with a more pronounced thumb rest but smaller filework. But ergonomically and opening wise, the Military is smoother. However, I'd carry the Starmate for everyday and leave the Military for heavy work days.

I find the Military to be much better balanced than the Starmate. It's probably the extra length of the handle on the Mil, the Starmate on the other hand feels to me very nose-heavy. That is, the weight of the blade feels much more than that of the handle so the knife's center of gravity feels off.

I have a Starmate and a Military sitting right here, and the Military does rest nicer in the hand somewhat moreso than the former.

It (Military) feels to me very similar to the Police model, with a little more hand filling of a handle. I used to not care for my Military much, but it has really grown on me. Still like my Starmate too! Heck, I really like all my Spydercos!

I have both the StarMate and the Military and I have found that the StarMate fits my uses and my hand ever so much better than the Military. I cannot say exactly why, except that my hands are not so large as many men's hands, and that I have arthritis in my hands. I have noticed no difference in smmothness or in sturdiness.

Thanks guys.

Believe it or not. the reason I asked was because I was looking for a reason to stop lusting after a Starmate! You haven't disuaded me from getting one at all, so I guess it's going to be Starmate time very soon.

The thing I love about the Military (hard to describe) is the smooth feel of the substantial blade sliding past the naked G10 handle slabs - very different to the knives I have with liners, and of course to the Zytel handled Spydercos I have. The Starmate looks like it could feel like a smaller version of same in terms of smoothness. Much as I love the Military I don't own one and don't plan to. A bit too big for my taste in daily carry (added to the meddlesome UK knife laws).

Time to start scheming towards that new purchase

I've got both. The Starmate has a straighter handle that, to me, isn't as ergonomic as the Military's. However, I tend to use the Starmate more often since it has a thicker blade near the tip. The Military is a better slicer though. The opening is similar because of the partial liner, but the Starmate's blade is heavier, so it's easier to flip open. Sort of a tradeoff in opening techniques since the Military has the larger opening hole, but the Starmate is easier to flip. Nevertheless, both are very easy to use and are great knives.

I don't have a Military, but I did recently pick up a Starmate. Of all my folders, i've been carrying it the most recently. Although the starmate doesn't have dual liners, I really like how light it is on your pocket. The starmate is very well built is the only knife I can open while wearing heavy gloves.

I am already missing it.

The Starmate is almost as big as the Military.
In theory, it is a little bit smaller, but I have both and I consider them practically similar in size.

The most pronounced difference is tip strenght: the Starmate has a much stronger point that can pierce open tin cans for example (I know that you should have a tin opener to open cans, this is just to illustrate my point-no pun).
They both offer very high performance (i.e. cutting power without constant resharpening), and they are both very light for their size-but they are large!
