I have a Shabaria on order, and am now plotting my next Spyderco purchase. Both the Starmate and large Calypso (plain) strike my fancy. Although I will eventually buy both, which should be first? Any particular reason? Thanks for your opions!

Very different knives.
The Calypso is a very elegant knife, nicely made and a very sharp slicer.
The Starmate is a bulletproof knife, a "survival folder" that will not let you down.

If they were cars, the Calypso would be a classic Jaguar, where the Starmate would be a Land Rover Discovery...

The Calypso. It has been discontinued. Get it first, then the Starmate.

I got my Starmate two days ago. I have had Calypso about 10 moths. Despite of the novelty value of the Smate(great knife) I'd pick Large Calypso any day. I don't need 'tactical knife' or should I call it sports utility knife but a cutting machine and Calypso outcuts SMate sooooooo easily. Calypso is nicer in pocket, looks better, better ergonomics..... I could continue very long time.

I would get the Calypso while you can. A very classy piece of cutlery. The Starmate will be around a while.

Calypso, what a great knife.....
Sharper than even the Moran. The first time I used mine was to slice a tomato, didn't use a cutting board, I didn't even feel it slice through the tomato and into my hand, super glue to the rescue. It is a very elegant, almost sensual knife, the polished scales have a suprising grip, even when wet.
Be safe,
Chad

If knives were women:
The Starmate is strong, powerful and beautiful! Say, Madonna, if she hadn't become a star, with a little more class & "life experience".
The Calypso is sleek, working class and comfortable. Kind of like the woman you'd marry if you were 40 instead of 20!

I've had more paper cuts than cuts from knives, but the knives are QUICKLY gaining!
