My wife says I must decide between the two. If you could only buy one (now) which would it be? Will be used for utility purposes.

Military, for the fully flat-ground blade and better ergonomics, IMO. Both super knives, though.

Super tough question.....if I had to make a choice between the Military and the Starmate, the Starmate wins. I like the lock up better and the saber grind. MHO.

Like Drew says, both knives are winners.

Tough choice - probably go with Military for ergonomics and ablility to open with gloves because of larger thumb hole.

Real tough choice! Sure you can't get both (my wife just sees the black scales...) and claim they are the same? Never have both together. I would go with the Starmate too. I have both and find the Starmate has a better feel in my hand. But the Military does have that flat grind. Probably a better utility blade. Starmate has a higher "Gee-Whiz" factor.

Your wife won't let you get both??? Get rid of her and get both!!!

I'm sorry, I was just kidding about that. I'm going to go against the grain and suggest the Military. It is one of my favorite production folders. I have two. It looks great, feels great and works great! I've handeled the Starmate and I don't like the feel of it.

Hey the hole is plenty big for gloves, and if I am not mistaken, it may be the same diameter as the Military, but actually it is the same as all my other Spydercos. Guess the hump just gives the illusion of size.

Personally I love the 50/50 serration pattern that is available. It actually gives you enough of both types of edges to get different tasks done. One of the real strengths of the Goddard series IMHO. Lock up is the best on a liner lock, I have ever seen, and better than a few Militaries I have handled and in another class from one I once owned. One thing too in its favor is that is has a spacer inbetween the scales. some may find this objectionable, but it adds some support to the G-10. Some Military owners who carry it their back pocket have had problems with the G-10 scales flexing. Just my two bits...

Starmate. The handle has to grow on you but once it does, it just feels better. I also get a better impression of a solid and strong tool with the Starmate. IMO the Military feels flimsy next to it.

I'd say both are equally good, so your choice must be dependent on which one feels best in your hands.

For me, the Starmate felt right from the beginning, and the Military wrong.

The Starmate!
I like it better than the Military. To me it looks classier while the Military looks more like a workhorse (that's why I have only two). As Griffon said before you it depends which of the two feels better in your hands. For me it is clear the Starmate.

I haven't fond-I mean handled one yet(Starmate), so I would just highly recommend the Military. Now the decision for either serrated or plain.

Cuttiger,
I think your decision tree is getting harder to climb.

Better ask the missus to reconsider and let you get both.

I once had the same problem.

TODAY I own both the serrated and the plain Militaries in CPM440V. I am also waiting for my plain AND my serrated Starmates, which should arrive by next week (if reports are correct).

SO, JUST DO IT! You're going to ANYWAY! (I've made my peace with this philosophy...
