Which is the best all purpose Spyderco knife between the Starmate (440V steel) and the Endura (VG 10 steel), both plain edge?

Hello,

Well IMHO I think the endura is by far the best all purpose knife.
Why? Easy : It is extremely sharp, well made and tough. It is not made however for stabbing or slashing... it's not tactical but will make an excellent self defense tool. It's also a lot lighter and easier to carry. It is also a LOOOT cheaper and thus easy replacable in case you loose it. The endura is made for being a workhorse in everyday cutting chores. That fits the profile of all purpose knife pretty good now isn't it ?

The starmate will beat the endura in solidity, strength, weight and size. It is just a far better fighting blade, and made for heavier use. The blade is also about twice as thick as the endura while staying about the same width.

Both are great choices, but you're comparing a banana and a AK-47 for food supply... the AK will be off course a lot better in warfair, but you didn't ask for that. :D

I agree..you should just get both and choose which to carry depending circumstances... that's the way I do it :D the endura get's carried a looot more, but who cares?

greetz and take care, Bart.

As posted by Anders, you will end up buying both anyway.

The Spydie virus spreads without mercy.:D ;) :D

The Starmate really caught my eye, and I find that it is on the discontinued list at Spyderco. Why do they do this? It looks like a great knife.

I like my Endura, but would also love to own a Starmate. Does anyone know who's got some of these in stock?

I will disagree somewhat with Bart in that I think the Endura is a terrific slashing blade, and stabbing into soft targets is'nt a problem either. In fact, I think the overall blade shape of the Endura is better designed for stabbing than the Starmate. And the "hump" of the Endura prevents your hand from sliding on to the blade very well.

I also think the Endura with the "Boye Dent" is less likely to fold on you with a tight grip (a potential weakness of all linerlocks).

However, they're both Spydercos and both are fine knives.

Good luck,
Allen.
