Sal...I have just recently gotten my hands on a Starmate (my second Spyderco/Bob T knife). I love the design, but I got to admit that I am a little concerned by the G-10 handles with no liner (at least the Wegner has half a liner). Is the clip attached only to the G-10 or do the screws go into the thin liner lock? Got any idea on the force required to actually break the handle/scales? Don't get me wrong here...I love Spyderco's (I have a fairly extensive collection of the custom collaborations).

Welcome to the forum, Knife Nut! No offense, but I pity Sal who has to answer this question frequently.

Basically, there's no need to be concerned about the strength of the handle. The handle actually does have a liner, which is recessed into the G-10 of one scale.

This steel liner adds overall strength to the handle, but it doesn't really need it. According to "Blade" magazine, you can take a length of G-10 that is about four feet by four feet, suspend it between two chairs, and have a grown man successfully stand in the center of it. The G-10 won't break even if it's only 1/32 of an inch thick!

Of course, if someone out there has a hydraulic press and really wants to break some knife handles, please post the results! I don't think I've ever seen specific data on the strength of Zytel, G-10, micarta, etc...

I believe that the clip screws tap into the recessed liner.

Knife nut - Welcome. Thanx for the time.

The Starmate does have a liner which is actually thicker than the Wegner liner. It is steel and is just nested into the G10 so you can't see it. Cerulean & Hugh are correct (thanx), The clip screws and back spacer screws (with steel posts) are threaded into the steel liner. The Stop pin is also nested. More difficult and more expensive to build than just adding a liner, but we believe that it produces a stronger, lighter, thinner piece.

thanx for the support, and the trust

Thanks Sal and others...keep the custom collaborations coming. And for Mickey77, I have not quite figured out how to add pictures yet.
