i probably dont need to ask this i have a feeling the answer is yes but is the terzoula starmate worth what it goes for on ebay. or has anyone ever had problems with the folder

If you are good at sharpening, the Starmate is an excellent knife...it is CPM-S60V (AKA 440V) and it is VERY hard to sharpen in my opinion compared to other modern steels. It is a liner lock so occasionally they will have issues, but overall it is a light and solid knife with a super blade grind. I would look for one here as Ebay prices go slaphappy with the Starmate and the Gunting.

I bought one in 2000, when I visited my brother in Boston, but soon it had a bad blade play in each directions, which I don't like. It was a very nice knife, but I traded it.

I picked one up and never used it. It's a nice knife, but now I'm afraid to use it as it has become collectable.

I have a pair of Starmates. I altered both by deepening the finger groove. Another forum member got the same idea and posted a how-to here some years ago, but I cannot recall his name. Well anyway, the first one I got was a partially serrated model, modified it for carry and when the plain edge model came out I summarily packed up the P/S one and put it away. Well, I did the same mod on the new one as it is an excellent modification.

Who knew they would get discontinued and go up so much?:o

I feel like one of those people on Antiques Roadshow who stained a piece of furniture only to find out later that in it's original state it would go for $100,000.00 but in it's altered state it's worth about 1% of that. DOH!
@~(*$^#@!!!

i have had 4 starmates (3 combo edge and one PE) and while they are "ok" i wouldnt pay some crazy premium for one, i can think of a lot of knives i would rather have.

the lock always looked "wimpy" to me, no liner and all, never had probs though, also dont like tip down knives, also i never could inertia open the things very consistantly, one of the few knives i cant FWIW, but all in all for the dollar i paid at the time (IIRC $100 or so) they were "ok" now ya start talking $150 and up for one?? no way.

also FWIW with the proper stones and technique the starmate isnt hard to sharpen at all.

several yrs ago i had a real bob T starmate now that was something, wish i still had that one but i swapped it for something or another.

also swapped all the spyderco starmates, got my $100 back out of them but if i would have known what they were gonna go for in a few yrs i woulda kept them,

but now, in '07 there are a lot of better knives around, and cheaper too, ie spyderco Ti and SS ATR, emerson CQC12/'13/8, BM rukus and skirmish and axis AFCK, etc etc et al.

Starmates were known to have liner lockup problems. I went through a few repairs and one replacement with Spyderco without success. However, they do have an eccentric pivot and proper adjustment of the pivot accompanied by lock-tite keeps em operational for about 2 years. Not the best grind job, the end of the grind lines of the swedge on mine were off by about a 1cm, but that was typical of the Spyderco american plant at the time.

I have no problem sharpening them using the grey spyderco stones. They are not at a high rockwell, I believe it's about 57. The very early ones were harder and chipped. The steel can chip if abused, but it's small and not really a problem.

However, despite my problems, I really like mine but I paid $45 new when they weren't selling well (right before closeout). Being American made is a plus to me, plus American steel. It is designed to be pulled, popped open with a downward flick, with the handle falling directly into your palm, blade extended (somewhere on this forum terzuola explained why it's tip down and how he expected it to be opened.) The blade cuts well and long, even dull the steel has toothiness that will continue to cut. It does have a partial liner on one side, but the G10 handles work great and are strong enough for any abuse. I've not been nice to mine. Dug in dirt, pried a nail out of tire, haven't thrown it though. Good stury knife.

I have one knew in the box, and i never carried it. Main reason is that im left handed and the starmate does not allow you to switch the clip to the other side.
