OK, one has $500. to spend on a new collection. Knives have to be used for:

1) EDC
2) Dayhiking/Backpacking/Camping
3) One for the truck
4) Cool factor important

What to buy?

Well, to me, an "all-at-once" collection kind of defeats the purpose of collecting.

That being said, how many knives are you looking for? Folders, fixed blades, or both? Any size preference or state laws to consider?

start with searching out a well made edc, it will do more than the camp knife unless you camp all the time. Get a few good knife dealers bookmarked and check there sites everyday. IMO right now
1. Rick Hinderer XM-18
2. Kirby Lambert Sniper
3. R.J. Martin Dress Havoc
4. Yuna knives has been putting out some really nice knives. I think they will become a popular custom.
would all make great starts to a collection and amazing EDC's
Talk to the dealers and the maker and you can usually get on one of there incoming lists, these knives are not as hard to find as people say in my experience. Now try finding a zipper blade. =P

Just me, but:

1) EDC - Delica; BM 710.
2) Dayhiking/Backpacking/Camping - Ontario RAT-3, -5 or -7, depending
3) One for the truck - Ontario RAT-7
4) Cool factor important - to me, the cool ones are the 7" to 9" fixed blades that aren't spendy like the Becker BK7 (when you could get one), BK9, Ranger RD7, etc. They just work the pleasure neurons in my brain. For others its Busse or Buck or almost anything. Thats the fun part.

cheers

1. BM 710
2. Fallkniven A1 or S1
3. Pretty much whatever, khuk maybe?
4. Fallkniven NL1, but that might be a little pricey

heh, this has actually been me over the past year or so. So far I've ended up with:

Fallkniven F1
Fallkniven P1 w.cocobolo
Spyderco jigged bone kiwi
Spyderco manix

manix is in the mail... so far I am pleased with my collection for camping, edc. etc.

And yes, I've got more on my wants list...

1. any of Stag and Steel's smaller blades
2. Busse CG Badger Attack TAC
3. RAT-7 or 9
again, should still have $$ left for sharpening equip.

1, 2, 3, 4: F1 blank blade and get a nice knifemaker to make a bling handle for you :) Maybe an idea for a tv show... Pimp my knife.

Or you can buy a F1 Micarta you will have half the money left for a U2 and a Laplander. Now you are well equipped.

Get a huge axe or pulaski for the car to kill off nearly roadkill :)

1) EDC- Emerson CQC-8, Spyderco Manix or waved Endura
2) Dayhiking/Backpacking/Camping-Ka-Bar Cutlass "machete"
3) One for the truck-Becker Brute and a good pair of loppers
4) Cool factor important-Benchmade Rukus

With $500, you can get some great knives. I don't have any personal experience with the Busse family of knives, so I can't recommend them yet. I suspect a Swamp Rat belongs in there somewhere. After Blade '07 rolls around, I suspect my answers will be different. A definite knife to get is the Ka-Bar Cutlass. It was the best $50 I ever spent.

Well, I would get a Hinderer XM-18. It is a tough, tough knife that can take all you throw at it and ask for more!

Well, I'd do this:

1) RJ Martin folder (look for a used one, and if there are any issues with it send it to RJ and he'll make it like new again)- the XM-18 is another good choice.
2) Frosts Mora
3) Small hatchet and/or folding saw- another option being the folding saw and a Stanley Fu-Bar (sorry, that's the only name I know it by).

4) I don't think it gets any cooler than having the right tools to do a job properly. Since I don't camp/dayhike/backpack as much as I'd like to, and find that a lot of times I don't need a blade for the car/truck I'd have to use quality (but less expensive) items for those. The Mora is a GREAT knife that'll do a lot. The hatchet/saw combo would be enough for most anything you'd encounter in the car. The point being, since my EDC is what I'm going to presumably have on me all the time I'd rather put the bulk of my money into a quality knife that will hold up to whatever.

Here's how I'd spend the $500

1)EDC: Case XX Peanut (~$30)

2)Dayhiking/backpacking/camping: Swiss Army (~$30)

3)For the Truck: Leatherman Wave (~$60)

(does this count as a knife? It does for me...)

4)Cool Factor: Just about anything from Microtech
Here's my choice for the remaining $380

That was fun. Now, convincing my wife that this was a good idea would be the hard part...
