Hey folks, I'd swear that a saw a post about this a while back, but I can't for the life of me find it (hey! You try searching for "belts" on this forum :)).

Since I'm coming down the home stretch of my grinder build, I need to buy some belts. What's a good collection for a first-time grinder owner? Koval has a belt package that seems to have a pretty good variety, should I just go with that? Or would I be better served handpicking some stuff?

What advice do you wish somebody gave you at this point in your knifemaking career?

Thanks,

Pop's knife supply sells a starter kit of belts. It is a dozen or so of the most used types so you can decide what you like best.

mine is 60 grzirc,80gr alox,220gr alox and 400grit alox.use the 80 for rough shaping handles.hope this helps.problem with buying"starter packages", you usually wind up with belts you don't use.

rocketman:

Found Pop's website, can't find the starter kit of belts...I suppose I can call tomorrow.

Tom:

Thanks for the specifics. It helps me weed out what will likely be the more useful belts.

Koval has a package for $64 that has the following stuff in it:

3M:

Three 36 grit 3-Mite Resin Bond Belts
Two 60 grit 3-Mite Resin Bond Belts
Two 120 grit 3-Mite Resin Bond Belts
Three 220 grit 3-Mite Resin Bond Belts
Three 400 grit 3-Mite Resin Bond Belts
Two 30 micron Film Belts
Two 15 micron Film Belts
One TZA-16 1200 grit Trizact Belt

Klingspor:

One 60 grit Blue Alumina Zirconia Belt
One 120 grit Blue Alumina Zirconia

Does this seem reasonable?

Thanks again!

If you are just starting to grind, one thing to keep in mind is; removing metal is about belt speed[fpm] and pressure. Keep track of your fingers also. Good luck, Fred

Thanks for the advice Fred. I'll be running a VFD so hopefully I'll be able to play with various speeds and see what works best.

I suppose I should add that I don't intend to do any stock removal knife making so my grinding will be more to finish up blades I've forged mostly to shape. That may affect my belt choice a bit...for example, I doubt I'll need 36 grit to really hog off steel.

Don't discount a 36 grit belt for hogging. When I got my KMG, I ordered a couple but was weary of using them. These days I have some of the most fun with a 36 grit Cubitron (ceramic) wunning WFO on my variable speed machine! Woohoo!!!

Like noted above, keep track of your fingers!
