About five years ago I really got into sharpening. Tried a few systems and stones and settled on splash and go Shapton pro stones. I was obsessed with getting the best edges I could freehand. I practiced a lot and got decent at it and started sharpening knives for all my family and friends. Anyhow...with Covid and the pandemic I am stuck here in Los Angeles trying to stay safe and all so I post in the Nextdoor app if anyone in my area needs a blade sharpened hit me up. Buck fifty an inch. I have started to work on others knives and today this guy comes by with this really chipped up stainless Damascus Santoku that had about 1/4” missing from the tip. Totally dull. I tell him to come back in a half hour and I filed the tip profile then went to work with my course stone. Then the 1000, then the 2000 etc till I am on the leather strop. I get it drifting through receipt paper and he comes back. I show him how sharp it is and tell him to not put it in the dishwasher anymore (handle was way faded from it...) and he smiles and says wow my wife wanted to throw that away and get a new knife.
Felt real good helping him out. Anyhow don’t know how much I will actively pursue this new enterprise but it has been fun so far to see faces say Wow...
Just thought I would share. Hope everyone is safe and well out there!
