Well, after reading & looking at all the pics, I decided to try my hand at whittling. The enclosed pic is my 2nd try at any kind of whittling. The 1st try ended up being a chair for my Daughter's dolls, lol.

I also notice that the Coping, Sheepsfoot, & Wharncliffe blade shape lends itself very well to whittling, at least for me.

The FB is one I just got from DP Knives. Not sure if it'd be considered a traditional FB, but it's 5.5" OAL with 1095 & bocote scales. It's only 1/16" thick, so it slices/whittles great.

The slippie is the Colt Congress (CT216) in stag that I got & it works pretty darn well.

Good job:thumbup:. I want to get my hands on a block of basswood so I can try that. Really good looking knives too. :D

IMHO, Wharncliffe & Sheepfoot are the best. The only thing better is dedicated carving tools.

I have two knives (folders) I use for whittling: a Case Loomfixer I bought from a member here, with a large Sheepfoot blade; it's become one of my best whittlers. The other is an old U.S. Schade 7OT Muskrat, that had damaged blades. The best option was to reprofile them into Wahrncliffe-type blades, and it's an amazing user now.

Good job on the ball & cage - it looks better than mine did. My first attempt years ago looked like something from a Salvador Dali painting.

thx - cpr

I've got to do one of those. I keep saying it, and never do....

It would be a great winter pastime. However if I do, I think a new knife would be in order for the project

Absolutely! A new knife would be in order. Seriously, I got that little FB this past week for whittling & that particular Congress, too, for its 3 Coping/Sheepsfoot blades.

I will say this, though, the Queen Stockman D2 with its Coping blade works very well because it holds its edge so well.

An unexpected bonus on my end is that my youngest (9), who has a few knives including a couple Cases (Tiny Trapper & a Seahorse Whittler), has gotten into it, too. Great quality time & constructive for her, IMHO. Sure beats her "vegging" out in front of the TV or begging to go on the computer, lol.

With my whittling style, best I have is an old Imperial BSA whittler stockman. I tried to whittle with a Seahorse and the Wharncliffe is just too thick for my style.

I love to carve and whittle. Apart from actual carving knives, my three are:

3" customized Mora
BRK Little Creek
BRK Mikro Tusk

The Tusk is a Wharnie/Sheep's foot design.
I've found that my most preferred is the Little Creek.
Wharnie's are good carver's, but the blade design a little too specialized for general carving tasks IMO.

The wharnie-style, I find, doesn't allow for as much tip versatility as a standard, more upswept point, esp. when tip-shaving with thumb push-cuts...
A wharnie has less of a cutting pivot in this regard IMO....

Its a great idea for doing with the kids.

really like that dp warny, did you commission that especially for this project? Couldnt see it on his site

Actually, I never saw his knives until I saw 2 of them in the Knife Makers F/S section. One sold real quick & the one I got, with bocote scales, was just sitting there with no one claiming it. For $45 shipped, I couldn't pass it up, lol.
