Starting a fire with a pop can and chocolate

Thanks Neko2,

Very informative post. I'm always looking for alternative ways to starting fires. I wonder if the Swedish sun in springtime has enough strength to light the fungus.

I'll have to try that... and try it with red clay from the dirt around here, who wants to waste a chocolate bar like that if they dont have to! (Or if you dont have one handy...)

I've tried it. I could get some dry grass to smolder, but never got a flame. I could ignite a match this way if I didn't have striker

It's a bit tricky.

Did you try it? What other tinders can you use besides the fungus?

I haven't tried it yet but once it stops snowing here I'll probably give it a shot in the backyard just because. I'll have to see if dark chocolate works any better (I have a bar of Lindt 85% cocoa) when I give it a go.

If anyone else has an experience with it feel free to share.

This is an absolute 'must try' project. Luckily the missus brought a 6 pack home from the Supermarket :D I now how 6 attempts. Everyone that tries it please write up your findings.

How much chocolate does it take? I may not try it if it'll "Consume" the whole bar... If I'm "Consuming" it then maybe I will... :p

I have made some smoke doing this but no flame. The bottom of the pop can must be like a mirror and it must also be very very sunny out.

Tried it today at lunch-time but could only get it to burn my finger. Will try this weekend when I have more time and hopefully better weather.

I've tried it, but cheated and used Brasso metal polish instead of chocolate.
I got smoke, very nearly got fire, but the sun wasn't quite bright enough.

Try to wear sunglasses when you try it, as I had green blobs infront of my eyes for hours after trying

LOL, so true man :D My mini Death Star did stuff up my vision for a few minutes.

If you have shiny foil wrapping there is probably a way to use it for your reflector surface. I need to figure out a convenient way to make several aluminum foil concave mirrors that can be used as a solar array.

Got it to work first time.

I used an automotive paint cleaner as the initial cleaner then a cross between a paint wax and abrasive to finish off. Polish with mutton cloth and you are set.

Tinder fungus ignited in about 3 seconds!

Ease up folks! :D You are hurtin' Tracker Trail.

  • Apr 24/05: Due to extraordinarily high visitation yesterday and today this site has been inaccessible from time to time. Obviously, if you're reading this, you got on! But if you have trouble accessing this site later, please have patience and try again. My excellent web host (iisnet networks) has responded to this and adjusted resources so there should no longer be any problem. The page causing all the traffic is Fire from a Coke Can and Chocolate Bar.
BTW, polish your can with toothpaste and finish up with some Flitz or Brasso. You can make some quick fire with these.

The site is back up.
A technical term for when a site goes down due to overwhelming popularity is "farked" as a result of the popularity of Fark.com

I tried this at work when this thread was started and all I managed to get was a white spot in my eyes for several minutes for looking at the bevel....hehehe :D
