I'm going to start a knife collection and I'm looking for a few things that I'll need besides the knives.

Ex: sharpener, oil kid.... ect.

THANKS!

Let your items and needs build up slowly and naturally. To collect knives, all you really need are ... knives.

Regarding sharpening, what kind of knives do you like? What kind of blade edges do you prefer? Depending on the styles of knives and their edges, you can tailor your sharpeners and skills towards those.

I know that there will be fanbois pushing something or other at you, but take your time. Spend your money wisely.

Collect what you like, make sure you have the essentials (sharpener, oils, basic solvents, and a place to keep them) and if you are going to store a knife for any length of time I'd clean it very well and apply a light coat of mineral oil. If you have any brass, silver, or copper components on you knives make sure that they are clean before storing them, and if you have anything tarnished (that you don't want to be) get some quality metal polish. On a related note leave any patina on older pieces as is, don't try to clean it up if anything it will decrease the value of the knife. If you are collecting knives to use you'd be set with a good sharpener and some oil (rem' oil, mineral oil, whatever) I use a lanskey sharpening system that works well for me but there are a lot of more modern options out there that are easier to use and just as effective if not more.

You don't need a safe initially, unless you have really large pieces or kids that can't be trusted to stay out of your drawers. A sharpening system is about all you "need" to go along with your knives to start.

Lockable storage.
Perhaps a display case?
Record book!
Camera and home studio.

If it's a Collection, you don't really need oil or sharpeners, or stuff like that. 'Collectors' normally pride themselves in keeping their knives in factory condition. :)

If on the other hand, by "collection" you really mean "a bunch of User knives," you'll need: Oil, sharpeners, micro tools for repair and dismantling, lockable storage. Still need a camera too, for recording your knives' adventures.

Good Luck!

If you plan to just "collect" meaning just have them sit and look pretty.. all you need is storage and the knives really. You'll also want to keep track of your purchases and the worth of said knives.

If you plan to carry and use them:
Sharpener - Stones, a system, and probably a strop.
Oil - Tuff Glide, Oil, And probably a type of "oil" that I used to have that would clear out some extra dirt.
Torx Drivers, Hex Drivers, Regular drivers, etc.
Also I would get a decent cloth(I have several) to wipe off the knives and such after use or when you're putting them away for the day.
And of course some sort of storage.

Good luck on your adventure!

somewhere to put em' :P every knife I bring home I have to struggle to find somewhere they will fit in my designated knife drawer and case
