hey all, any fellow riders here on the forums?

i've been riding dirt bikes since about 6 yrs. old, but i bought my first street bike back on september. i have been riding all over the place, but i never got my motorcycle license... but i will after this weekend.

i chose to take the class, just to be on the safe side of things. could have gone to DMV and taken the tests, but i feel that i need to know as much as possible while riding here in tampa (very sucky, thick and dangerous traffic here).

anyway, maybe no one cares, but i thought i'd throw it out there.

take care!

Myself for the umpteenth time. Taken FROM THE ANNOUNCEMENT AT THE TOP OF THE FORUM!!!! said:
Gadgets & Gear: Threads regarding any object that is not a knife, such as guns, gun related articles, shoes, flashlights, backpacks, spoons, cars, motorcycles, etc. belong in this forum. This includes discussion of same.

Off it goes to G&G. ;)

Nice small semi auto pistols really deter folks from deliberately running you off the road.:D

If you have been riding for a long time and think you can pass the DMV test then the course should be a nice refresher.

I highly suggest it. The MSF course is worth its weight in gold. Tampa Traffic is hectic, and I don't envy you.

You're going to have a blast! My class was snowed out two years ago and I've never been able to reschedule. Wife took the class last year and had a great time.

You might also consider reading the "Proficient Motorcycling" and "More Proficiient Motorcycling" by David Hough.

You might also stop in and say high over at the Beginner Bikers website. They're always happy to hear from a new rider and there's probably someone over there from the Tampa area. www.beginnerbikers.org

Best Wishes, and keep the shiny side up!

nice link bob w, thanks for that. i love forums, and with the addition of this, i almost have a forum for everything i am interested in.

as for the tampa traffic; i have mapped my way thru back roads to work, on 2 lane semi-residential roads, rather that the 6-8 lane roads i normally take in the truck.

I would also like to get a bike some day. I hear taking the MSF course waives the DMV riding test in some states. I've also heard the DMV test is actually pretty hard.

In most states you simply need to show the DMV clerk your paperwork showing that you passed the class and there's no need to re-test. Here in New Mexico things are a little more complicated. There are no local classes, so the nearest locations are out-of-state. But the DMV won't accept the paperwork if the class was not in New Mexico.

Here's the ironic part, the DMV test here is a piece of cake. They just want to make sure you can ride without losing control of the motorcycle. There was no real skills test. The guy who gave me the test stood in the parking lot as I rode around. He did ask that I go fast and then brake without skidding, do a figure-8 ("how tight" I asked, "stay on this side of the parking lot"), and watched as I rode down the street obeying traffic laws.

It just depends on your DMV office. The next-closest MVD doesn't give the tests themselves; they call a police officer who administers the test.

If you're considering riding some day, don't put it off.

Best Wishes,
Bob
