Well I finally got told to start the garden. When Brandi came home from the gym this morning with a 6 pack of beer for me, took me to breakfast, and didn't say anything about me not doing the dishes I knew something was up.

So, dug up the chive plants, and the lantana and turned over the soil for a one row garden. Basically 2' wide by 25' long. Went over to my friends nursery, picked up some heirloom tomatos, canteloup, zucchini, yellow crook neck, bell peppers, pear tomatoes and then to the seed supply for some carrot, broccoli, onion, water melon, rosemary, thyme, and basil.

In a couple weeks we'll get more things going in planters.

Next year we will expand it a bit to two rows.

What are you planting this year?

Nice work Xander! Keep us posted on the progress please!

I'm getting my garden as soon as the snow melts. We are building a second raised bed...

Well its now ready to grow! Brandi got everything in the ground now. We have been soaking the ground over th last few days to make digging up the other stuff easier and prep the soil for the new plants.

I like those labels ;). I'm actually starting a garden on my porch in a week or so. Gonna buy a few planks and make a trough of dirt, in addition to some big pots. Though it's mostly going to be food for my mom(I don't like vegetables at all).

Wish I lived in a warm climate namely for the longer growing season. Here in wisconsin, there's still snow on the ground and temperatures are just starting to warm up into the 30's.

Can't wait to see how your watermelons turn out!

I'm the third generation at my families garden center and I'm always excited to see people get out and grow their own. So far in my personal garden I have lettuce, cabbage, sugar peas, kale, broccoli, and yukon gold potatoes. Probably another two weeks here before I'll put out any warm season crops. Not to be rude, but if you direct planted those broccoli seeds I think you might be disappointed. Broccoli is usually started inside and transplanted later. Mainly because the young plants can break easy, but also because the mature plants need 12 to 18 inch spacing.
If you or anyone else here would like, I have a growing guide pdf file that my store hands out. The planting dates wouldn't be right for you, but the spacing, depths, and distances between rows for different crops would still apply. I'd be happy to email it to anybody that wants.
Good luck and I hope you have a bountiful harvest.

You forgot to plant BACON!
Bacon tastes good, pork chops taste good!

Looking good! Nice labels for Xyler and you guys too! My parents let me plant my own radish garden every year, they only take a few weeks so that was good as a kid.

Jade, Sara, the three kittes, The Dude, Selassie, Samson and I went up to the garden today and checked it. There is still a foot of snow on the bed but it is melting fast!

Very good, Xander!
We hope to start a garden this year.
Nice! Keep us posted if you get pics!

Nice! I do some container gardening so I can move them once it gets really cold.

You guys grow cheese up there, right! Sounds good.... :D

Seedsacker-

Thanx for the kind words! I have been gardening for most of my life and the nursery this stuff came from I worked at for a period of time. I have the broccoli spaced at 24" and only two spots, I had enough seed for 40'! Same thing with the onions. When they start to show I have wire that goes over the bed to protect and suppot them.

The water melon and canteloupe will go in a different bed tomorrow, its just a small strip of dirt between the house and driveway that faces south,so should be good for them. The questionmark is something we forgot what it is, lol! We'll see when it grows up!

Daniel, Zyler is a little young to stay interested, but he said he wanted carrots so that's what he got. Brandi has never really gardened much, so she kept wanting to put everything in there, never mind the space or season! I reminded her several times that we only have one row and each plant needs room. I picked up a new very basic growing guide for our area so Brandi hs some sort of idea what's going on.

I am also going to buy/build a small trough for the herbs, and a second one for hanging strawberries in the tree.

Nice! I lie the strip garden concept, clean and out of the way. I tend to go crazy and plant too much stuff! I'm still learning what grows well here, across town at my old passive solar place we could grow anything but here it is different. Silverton just north has the shortest season in the US at 21 days with no freezing.

Cool Xyler got some carrots! I was a lot older when we did the garden too..

Nice on the secondary stuff too, we have strawberries and some horseradish and perennials on the side... thyme, oregano, blueberries, all kinds of good stuff.

Well, I noticed today that the carrots, broccoli and water melon which were started from seed have sprouted and are just showing! Still waiting on the onion to show. I got some decorative wire fencing up to keep Radar out and Zylers toys out.

Like I mentioned in the chat thread, last Saturday we started the thyme, basil, and rosemary in pots on the front porch.

Pics comin soon...
