So quick story:

I used to collect pocket knives when i was younger ever since my grandpa gave me two Barlow Novelty Knives.

I do have some other knives but I know nothing about them. I am not a knife guy unfortunately. I would like to learn more about knives and start collecting. I was thinking of maybe starting out with these Barlow knives and finishing the set off but i don't really know where to look. I don't wanna just hop on ebay and get a knife that is all rusted looking.

I have already bought some cheap knives i found cool looking or interesting to start collecting but I am already noticing I am just wasting money on things I don't know about.

I would like to know where I could find all these Novelty knives and maybe start there depending on the price range they are at.

I know pretty much nothing about knives other than they can cut so any advice for a new guy would be appreciated.

Thanks

These are still around and Being produced today but in china.
They've got Roy Rogers, Red Ryder, and the rest.
I'm sure you want to get the originals just as I would as I prefer American carbon steel, but the new ones are available if you can't find them.
( Each should be well under $20 or even under $10 if you do find them )

Btw you should also get yourself a good knife to carry in your pocket, the Victorinox recruit and victorinox tinker are great readily available knives at $17 and $20 respectively.

I didn't even know these were produced still today. Good info about looking for the ones made in US. I carry a Fire Fighters 18-657ff. Prob not the best knife but it works for when I need one.

Yeah, I had a search and rescue version of that knife that fell apart, but sometimes on a very rare occasion you can get lucky and these types of cheap knives will stay together so hopefully yours does.

Do not get into knives
BLASPHEMY!...

C CThatch Welcome I think smkw has the new/current Chinese production models but if you want the classic American made, which I would, you will have to search the bay and such for them. I would expect the American made ones will cost more as they are more likely to be collected and viewed/treated as collectible.

Is there a site or a list somewhere of all the Barlow novelty knives or how many of them there are from the US? I think I would like to start collecting all of them first.

I don't know too much on Novelty knives even quality ones with cool novelty prints like those. I think if you got to SMKW site you can filter some to find what they have.

Since I don't think any supporting dealers carry these I believe it's okay to tell you that smokey Mountain knife works carrys them.

I can’t help with the specific type of knives you’re pursuing, but as still new to the forum myself, I can offer a few tips that should prove useful for a new member:

  • Buy a membership. You’ll be taken more seriously, and will have more forum benefits available to you.
  • Read the forum rules. All of them. Twice. This will help you avoid breaking any of them and getting scolded by mods or members.
  • Use the search function. Chances are, you won’t have too many questions that haven’t been asked before. So before you start a thread for every thought that pops into your head, search to see if a thread already exists.
  • Take your time. There’s a ton of good information here, and many very knowledgeable people here.
  • Be open to new directions. You might start with an interest in one type of knife and end up pursuing something different altogether.
  • Take your time (yes, again) and don’t get too comfortable too fast. Get to know the forum layout, the members, and the overall etiquette of the forum without barging in like you own the place. It’s a community with its own personality. I’ve watched someone else who joined around the time I joined get too comfortable too fast, and they’ve made themselves a bit of an annoyance to some veterans.
  • Have fun and welcome!

Frist off welcome aboard.
I see knives like what your grandpa gave you quite often at flea markets and antique shops.
I wish I could give you a price they don't peak my interest enough to look at the price.

I would suggest you look at flea markets, garage sales, possibly antique dealers, perhaps pawn shops, and similar kinds of places. SMKW sells modern versions of many novelty knives and of course they have a very large store in Sevierville TN (Smoky Mt National Park area). There has been a knife show in north Georgia for the last few years in March where the majority of the tables are old slip joints and so forth. See if you can find a similar type knife show in your area and of course attend. They can be fun. My problem with older knives (good, bad, or novelty) is that I have no idea what kind of pricing is appropriate on many of them, so I'm at the dealer's mercy as I have no reference point. As a result, I generally stay away from them unless I am looking for something in particular that I know a little about. But generally speaking, I don't collect knives; I just accumulate them.

Make plans for Blade next June in Atlanta. Start saving now.
