Starting out with no-spin throwing

My wife is interested in no-spin throwing of things that can fit in a small purse. So far, that looks like spikes, shurikens, and possibly smaller blades.

That's where I'm stuck. She tells me she may try it out and decide it's not for her, so while I want to buy stuff that's good enough that she doesn't get discouraged quickly, I don't want to buy a lot of stuff that might get used only a few times.

Looking at spikes, I'm also wondering if it might make sense to just buy some 6" and 7" nails and turn them into spikes with a grinder.

So, what do you recommend to start out?

...depends a lot on the hold/throw technique that you would use...and you'll never know which is more comfortable/acurate for you until you start throwing.
That being said, as far as what you described it sounds like a heavier boot knife with a smooth, straight handle would do just fine to start off with.

Being the Wet Blanket that I am I would recommend that you check out the knife laws in your area first. Carrying around throwers in a purse as an EDC can be illegal in most states. Personally I can't think of any good reason to carry them as a CW. They are about the worst option for SD if that is the thinking and the penalties can be greater than carrying a gun without a permit.

I would suggest trying screwdrivers first. They are weighted properly for the no spin techique which means that they are handle heavy. This helps to facilitate the no spin throwing style. Longer is better to start with and once the technique is learned you can step down in size. The target can be as simple as multiple layers of cardboard to a log end of a cottonwood tree. Softer is better for targets both for sticking and less abuse on the knives. With the no spin technique a harder wood will eventually break the point off of most knives. You can pick up screwdrivers at garage sales or flea markets cheaply.
