I decided to try a differnt finish on this standard tanto, so I gave it an etched finish and used two pau brasil (a very dense red wood) as the handle slabs. The knife is not ready yet - I still have to disassemble the handle for some touch ups befor e resin soaking it - but I was excetied to show you this piece.

Will this piece have further finishing on the blade (satin finish, hand rubbed or ?) or is this how it will look when once finished?

The blade has been horizontally polished as my regular knives are before etching, Harry, but I just can't show it with the scanner. As I use a 120 grit belt, the horizontal lines don't disappear with the etching, creating a very interesting effect.

Nice combination of materials, Ivan. Is this the same steel as my kiridashi? I finally got a chance to use it for cutting up some thick leather for a couple of sheath projects and it performed very well. That cord-wrapped handle was very comfortable to use also. Keep up the good work.

Ivan, you'll have to forgive my stupid question...but I am curious. The little silver 'bug' (dont know what ya call it) under the cord. Is it mounted to the handle permanently, or is it just laid on and held with the cord wrap? Its kinda neat looking however its done.

The silver piece in the handle is called a menuki and is usually seen in japanese swords'handles. It can be of many shapes and the one I used in this knife is in the shape of a schrimp (wich is very different from a bug... I love to eat schrimp and am not too fond off eating bugs...). it is glued to the handle, then I apply the cord wrap and then resin soak the entire handle. very tough.
