I just started my first knife. I don't have a grinder so I am using a hand grinder with a flap wheel. i have the roughed out version done and I still have to draw the handle partandind it out.

Has anyone started out this way? Any helpful hints and advice will be greatly appreciated. I will try to post some pictures when I am done so all you guyscan critique it.

Thanks,
Brad

Without a belt grinder of some sort, I'd suggest getting some good files to start with. Get the biggest half round file you can find for really removing the metal. Get a big flat mill bastard to true things up and remove the gouges from the half round file. When you get it where you want it with the files, get started with coarse sandpaper and work your way to as fine as you want. The type of steel you are working with will dictate how far you want to finish it before heat treating.

Where in Mississippi are you?

I grew up in Jayess and still call there home. Most of my family still lives there, in fact. My grandfather lives in Brookhaven.

There is a very good maker named Jamie Allen that lives in Brookhaven. I don't have his contact info at my fingertips, but he's probably in the book. It is a huge help to watch and learn from a good maker. If you're interested and can't find his number, I'll try to get up with him and see if he's available.

todd, I am originally from Monticello. I know Jackie Robbins, are you related to him? I would love to get in touch with Jamie Allen, if you can get in touch with him. Thanks and look forward to talking with you some more!

My dad's name is Jackie Robbins and so is my younger brother's. Did you go to school at Lawrence County H.S.? Small world, huh? You might also know my wife, Johanna Davis (maiden name). She wants to know if this is Brad Gatlin?
