This is based on State Farm's insurance claims. Listed first is the City, State. Then the intersection. Then a number representing their research. The bigger the number, the worse it is.

Flamingo Road and Pines Boulevard
2568

2. Philadelphia, Penn.
Red Lion Road and Roosevelt Boulevard
2317

3. Philadelphia, Penn.
Grant Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard

4. Phoenix, Ariz.
7th Street and Bell Road

5. Tulsa, Okla.

2000

6. Tulsa, Okla.
71st Street and Memorial Drive
1995

7. Phoenix, Ariz.

8. Plano, Tex.

Here's the link to the study results where you can read more about it:

Also, at the bottom, you can check your state individually.

Can anybody confirm any of these?

...just a lil' Friday afternoon fodder.....:D

I checked my state, and #s 6 and 8 (I think) are both very busy (for here). The two salem ones that is. I frequent them both and well, pretty much any part of lancaster is going to be busy. I can easily see how they would make it in the top 10 for oregon. Thing is the two are only about 1/2 mile apart.

This was news here in DFW area a few years ago, some of our bigger intersections are on the list for Texas (and I thought nationally, back then). Since they only have State Farm records, they claim to adjust for the % of market share they have, in order to compare between areas. However, I don't believe the study takes into account the crash rate, rather using the overall number of crashes. A very large urban intersection may have more than 50,000 vehicles passing through per day, so the overall number of crashes will be high, even though the crash or injury rate per 1000 vehicles may be low compared to a smaller intersection with only a few crashes per year. The crash rate is really what they should be looking at to determine what is dangerous.

Anyways, the sentiment in the traffic engineering community is that the lists are pretty useless from a scientific standpoint, but anything to get traffic safety into the news is a good thing. The city staff for the cities on the list may have been annoyed at the publicity, but I believe SF did put in a little money for spot improvements to the intersections.

I'm sure they just go by the stats,
which should be pretty accurate.
But biased by traffic volume.

Given that,
the stats for tulsa are probably accurate.

though there are many other locations in tulsa
I watch much more carefully as I pass through.

Plano Texas!
My hometown. I have driven through that intersection many times.
It is in the center of a super-high area of growth. Every time I drove out there, there was a new store or house built.
I think there are about 2 million people driving through it every day.
We have been on the list a long time. I think alot of people just decided to go a different way when they could.

Yep. These intersections are in the Tulsa Daily World every once in a while.
But like Dean says, "the stats for tulsa are probably accurate though there are many other locations in tulsa I watch much more carefully as I pass through."
Tulsa is notorious for people running lights. Even after the light turns green I look both ways to see what's coming!

Evidently our traffic engineer's don't realize that the amber light is for caution and they set them for only a millisecond so when the light starts turning it's generally already too late to stop in time.

Yeah, it's always nice to see Tulsa get high ratings! ;)

Personally I think Lewis is bad if a non-Tulsa is near you!!

I live 3 miles from #5

Pat, any of those old narrow four lane streets that oughta be two lanes are scary. Too me they're especially scary when some arsehole in a SUV wants his half outta the middle and is talking on a cell phone.
