States could use a law that says....

that you can carry any length of knife you want providing you don't have any kind of record. Doesn't matter if concealed or not. If stopped in regard to your knife the cop gets on radio and checks you out and if all is well you are good to go. Once you have been convicted of a crime.... no more knife. This lets the law-abiding citizen have a little more leaway towards his EDC. This would stop a lot of paperwork and determination of the exact length of knife in question, etc. Might put some lawyers out of work.

Yes, but whatever happened to a second chance, also this would bar all people who have commited a crime from working in places such as UPS (in which I couldn't do my job without a knife). And just because you haven't been convicted, doesn't mean you aren't a criminal, aside from that there are knives that just aren't necessary for an EDC, like a knife disguised as something else.

Move to Illinois, not Chicago though as they have their own laws, as we can carry what we want as long as we don't use it as a weapon. I've never had a problem and I work with a lot of State Police who all seem to love my SMFs. YMMV (Then they proudly show me their S&W knives :D :D and talk about how nice they are.)

ckj..... Obviouslyl, I haven't worked out the details, but my main thought is that most people that carry EDCs are responsible people and should be able to carry any length they want. I don't care about second chance or third chance people. Maybe the law would say that they can carry, but only a blade length of 2 inches or something along that line. That size blade should be able to cut any cardboard that you have. It's just the idea that a law abiding citizen his entire life should not be hassled because his blade is an inch or two longer than the current state or local law.

ANY kind of record? May want to redefine that to exclude things like parking violations and other misdemeanors.

I have no problem with permanently taking knives away from people convicted of violent crime.

No i dont' have problem with length, it's just that I wouldn't want a knife to look like say... a stick of lipstick that's just deceptive. Or I wouldn't want the knife to shoot something.

The point is.... A good guy with no criminal record gets to carry any size because he is a good guy.

A bad guy with a criminal record does not get to carry "just any size" because he was a bad guy. If he has paid his dues, after a certain length of time, he too can be a good guy.

Don't get caught up in the "what ifs".... Look at the big idea.
This would eliminate a lot of problems from state to state as to what determines the exact blade length and all states would be roughly the same.
And for sure the bad guy is already carrying illegal knives right not.... Only the good guy is trying to obey the law by carrying his 2" knife or whatever.

.... OK with me. Let's get going on this.
