Most of the knife catalogs I receive have the state restrictions listed or posted by the knives. I'm not sure about the websites, since I really don't have to worry about it in my state.

DO NOT BELIEVE THE KNIFE CATALOGS!

Here's what's up: in California, a couple of very small rural towns sued some of the big mail order knife catalogs for the cost of "youth violence from cheap fighting knives". Smoky Mountain and some others turned around with a policy of "no sales of anything combat-looking to California".

This has absolutely nothing to do with laws.

Jim

Thank you for the correction Mr. March. I was not aware of this over reaction by some of the mail order companies.

Re. NY and TN - code sections?

Possession? Sale? Carrying?

Smokey Mountain sells a lot of double-edged knives out of Tennessee, but a concealed double edged knife on your person, if you do something to attract the attention of law enforcement, will get you a free ride downtown in many jurisdictions, including those that prohibit "concealed daggers" or "concealed weapons" without specifying the number of edges, since a double edge tends to spoil your "It's only a tool" argument.

"But officer! I only use it to open letters when I pick them up at the post office!"

California never did have a specific prohibition against carrying double-edged knives. "Dirk or dagger" went without an official definition for a long time, and has since had two and a half definitions, never mentioning edges.

Massachusetts doesn't have any law against sale or possession as far as I can figure out, but some mail-order companies seem to think it does ... reasoning with them doesn't seem to accomplish anything ... all you can do is take your business elsewhere.

Double edged knives are illegal in Mass. I can't site you the exact law but try any cutlery shop in the Boston area and you won't find them. Most catalogs do say they can't ship to Cal and Mass knives of dubious nature so there must be something to it. Also anytime you read in the papers here about people getting arrested they always make a big deal if the police find any double edged weapons and those charges are added to whatever charges they were arrested for to begin with. Like I said I'm not sure of the exact wording of the particular law so maybe some other Mass residents on here might have more info.

Carrying a double-edged knife is indeed illegal in Massachusetts. And it is true there are some stores in Massachusetts that don't sell them and tell customers it's illegal to sell them.

seven months ago at the annual gun show a police Occifer was walking around to all the knife makers checking for double edge (illegal to carry in hawaii)...told me to put them away..illegal...i polite told him that they were illegal to carry, not to manufacture or to own...then he said..how will they take them home...to which i was stumped...put them away....went and talked to my good friend who was a higher up, put a for display only sign on that side of my table and put them out again...thats how picky some people can be. Its mostly up the the individual....whether he is a gung ho rookie or long term veteran...as to the consequences...most guys would just give you a verbal warning....depends on who and where you are and what you are up to.

Tom Mayo,
It might have been refreshing and maybe just a little frustration relief to have publicized the overzealous officers efforts. Maybe a letter to the local newspapers asking why the hell the city was spending money on trying to catch knife collectors instead of thugs selling drugs to school children.

Hi, since you're from Texas, you already may know this, but in Texas, the penal code states you cannot carry a dirk or dagger. Court case law seems to have translated that into no double-edged knives. However, they are legal to own & keep in your home. As far as I know, they can be shipped in & out of the state. Weird law, but that's the way it is

Carrying a double edged knife is most likely illegal in just about all the 50 states give or take a few but the question was shipping to certain states not carrying. So if most dealers AG Russell included won't ship double edged knives to Massachusetts I would say that there is some type of law on the books.

Jim Mattis:

The sales people at Smokey Mountain Knife Works are among those who have told me that double edge is illegal to sell in TN. I don't know the codes.

Well, F%$#@!!
I guess I'll have to call the local police and/or DA to ask for details, before I carry my Gerber Guardian again.

We can own anything in Connecticut. Can't carry double edge or blades over 4inches.

MickMan a lot of times the police are pretty dumb when it comes to the law and you can't really rely on the info you get from them.
You might just want to use your PC to go to your states website and check the statute for yourself just to make sure. I keep a copy of the knife laws for my state in the glove box of my car.
