After reading Rusty's thread on Freedom and a few other notes that have been added to the forum and the general mentality that seems to pervade these days, I thought you all would appreciate this that a friend sent me.
Number of physicians in the US - 700,000
Accidental deaths caused by physicians per year - 120,000
Number of deaths per physician per year - 0.171
Number of gun owners in the US - 80,000,000
Number of accidental deaths by guns per year, all ages - 1500
Number of deaths per gun owner - .0000188
Statistically physicians are 9000 times more dangerous than gun owners

Not everyone has a gun
But everyone has at least one doctor

Please alert your friends and family to this alarming info.
Something MUST be done to ban doctors before this gets out of hand.

THAT IS GREAT! Man, do I love tastee bits of statistics like that to lay waste to those who demonize firearms. But, you know, those people are correct to fear guns as they have been known to jump up and shoot people under their own power!

Putting the sarcasm aside for a moment, hopefully the powers that be will allow us to keep our right to defend ourselves from those who do not obey the law. Want a more dangerous place to vacation than usual? Head to the UK where violent crimes against people have increased to ridiculous proportions.

Here are some more statisitics:

According to an article in American Handgunner July/ Aug 2001 p. 105 entitled, " The World's New Crime Capital", The following stats are for the UK and Australia AFTER the banned firearms:

- Australia and the Uk have the highest crime rates in the world, overall

- 30% of the population of Australia have been victimized in violent crimes------Also a 3.9% Burglary rate

-Home burglaries and auto thefts occur 50% more often in the UK than the US

-There are 75% more rapes in Britain than in the US.

- In England, 26% of the population has been victimized in violent crimes. Also the UK sports the highest contact crime rate in the world at 3.6% ( vs. the US at 1.9% where 32/50 states have "Shall Issue" laws for firearms.)

- Newcastle in Northern England, may be the most dangerous place in the civilized world for incidents of violence against the Person: Assault, Rape, and Murder: 236.5 per 1,000 residents.

- After England and Australia, the highest prevalence of crime was :
Holland 25%
Sweden 25%
Canada 25%

All of which has severe weapons restrictions.

The US, even with a high murder rate was at 21% and ranked middle of the pack with other countries.

I'm sorry to brow beat my fellow forumites, but it is important that we do not Pi$$ away our rights little by little because we won't have any before long. You know that if we all are told to turn in our guns, the government will find something inherently Evil about large knives as well.......... Just a thought--be ever vigilant!

I'm off the soapbox, here's $.03, and keep the change!:)

WELL PUT CRAIG! OH! and here's penny change. I'll listen any time. Restrictive knife laws are well on the rise around the country and on ALL types of bladed implements, not just large ones. Pay attention you all.

Use it or lose it. I ain't gonna be around that long but you kids take if from old Uncle Bill. Keep every knife and gun you have and keep them legal. That has been the American way and if it changes so will America and I fear for the worse.

Thanks, all!

GOD,GUNS and GUTS...the three G's that made America!!!!! Without guns freedom dies! Please join the NRA and help protect our true American freedoms, even if you don't own a gun!!! Thank you!!!

P.S. Because of the 2nd Ammendment all others are possible!!!! Don't forget it!!!!!!!!!!!!

Craig,

Could you clarify what crimes are include in the 25% value for Canada. It may be may age, size, location or my social habits but I have not encountered much violence here in Canada.

I do not think weapons control regulations here in Canada has reduced crime at all.

Will:

I can only infer what crimes the article was including in the 24% ( Sorry, my notes on the article were off by 1%). The source of these percentages is England's Daily Telegraph Newspaper which was cited in the AH article. Since all the other crimes talked about were violent crimes in the article, I would probably speculate that they would be crimes against the person: assault, battery, rape, robbery, murder, et al. I wish I could give you a definitive answer, Will, but I'm glad that you've had no such difficulties.....Maybe because you walk softly and carry a big knife! :D

You also could not be more correct about gun restictions not reducing crime. Quite the contrary, in fact.

That article states, as well, that from March 1999 to March 2000, handgun violence in the UK was up 33% ---After handguns were banned!! All that happens is the society becomes unarmed victims since only the law abiding citizens have turned in their guns. It's easy pickins' for the criminals who kept their guns.

Sad. Truly Sad.

Well, We could (as we often do here) go with the herd rule. "It won't happen to me" I always seem to see mostly democrats under this one. If you are in the middle of the herd (middle to upper class) then it won't effect you, after all you do live in a much better neighborhood.

From what I have read about Sweden their crime is largely due to immigrants. And yes they do have a lot of gun laws but shooting sports for them are like bowling in the USA. You often see people with rifles going to and from shoots on both buses and trains which are often held in the middle of the town or city. Kinda of makes you take notice.

Craig, thanks for the clarification. I just read an article about handguns being the most used murder weapon in Toronto. Handguns were used in 60% of the murders. Even the normally leftist Toronto Star said that the almost all those handguns were illegally obtained (probably smuggled in). The article goes on to explain that steeling them from gun owners is also difficult as the crooks need to find them first. With registration here in Canada these records may be easier to obtain.

There was a thread on one of the shooting forums, about an Indiana newspaper which obtained the full list of CCW permit holders in that state, and published them on their website. In order to "protect the identity" of these people, they gave only the names, and the town (no street address, soc. security no., or dental records). Two days after the incident, a man was raided, beaten and robbed, both he and his wife on the critical list. No proof that this was connected to the website, but he had lived there for years, had firearms all that time, and had never had even a break-in. The coincidence stinks.

A rough-raid, home invasion is my biggest fear. Everyone in town knows my hobby, that I was a CCDW instructor for years, and that I have firearms. I, also, have had no burglaries or any other problems, but general publication of what my neighbors have known for years could be an invitation. Your immediate neighbors aren't the problem - the crack and meth heads (all with cars, and now computers) are mobile and always on the hunt for a "quickie". The BS put out by the bureaucrats isalways costly if you listen to it, but in this case, and in Canada, it could turn cold and deadly in an instant.

I remember a story of a small town Georgia mayor who passed a local ordinance requiring every household to have a gun in the home. Crime rate went down once every home had a gun in it.

A mayor in Southern Utah did the same thing and crime also went down there. I wish more towns/cities would do the same.

Even more impressive was a town in Florida in which a series of rapes caused a run on gun shops by women. Since they had every right to buy them, authorities had no way to stop them. But they still were worried about an astronomical rise in untrained people with with guns in a nervous condition.

They must have been out of options, because they tried the sensible thing. If those guns were out there, let's at least show them basic safety. So the cops put an ad in the paper advertising a gun safety class for women.

From the day of the ad in the paper, rapes went from something like 2 rapes every 3 weeks to zero in over three years the last I heard. Someone else probably can dig up the accurate facts, but my memory is probably close enough for practical purposes.

(BTW, with a neck so calcified it's nearly fused, I can't shoot an ought-six anymore without a few shots causing lingering pain. So I picked up an SAFN 49 in 7x57 caliber. A semi-automatic with a ten round fixed magazine fed with stripper clips like an SKS. And keep 200 rounds of 175 grain ball on hand - the stuff Karamoja Bell used to harvest hundreds of elephants with. Gorgeous, made like a swiss watch, mint condition.)

(Also BTW, if you can't get a Garand at a reasonable price, look at Empire Arms http://www.empirearms.com/ where they have arsenal refurbished to like new condition MAS 49/56 semi-auto rifles sealed in plastic with 4 of their 10 round mags and accesories for $350. Ammo is harder to get but commercial 1999 production 7.5x54 ammo is going for $120/200 rounds when they have it. The plain old SKS is also a good deal for the money)

Uncle:

The small Georgia town you are refering to is Kennesaw, GA., and you are correct about crime dropping like a rock. I didn't know what the violent crime rate was before, but it ended up being .11 % ( That's eleven hundreths of one percent !) That's purdy darn good as we say in the deep south!:D

-Craig

Who can argue with those success stories. I also advocate giving leos the same (or better!) firepower as the crooks.
