Does anyone know if this lock has any future? There was talk that Benchmade bought it from the now defunct R.E.K.A.T. If true, are we likely to see a more refined rolling lock or will it sit on a shelf, unused?

I bet it's dead. Why would Benchmade push a one-sided lock of no particular usefulness when they have the elegant, smooth, tough, and ambidextrous axis lock? I'm not pushing the axis, I only have one, the 710, and it's a beautiful knife with a great lock, but it's not my daily carry. Still, it's way beyond the rolling lock.

As much as I love my Carnivours and Sifu, I have to agree with E.B.
Benchmade has a serious winner with the Axis Lock. Why mess with the Rolling Lock?
Now, I think a company like CRK&T might benefit from adopting and refining the Rolling Lock. If they were to adopt it and weed out the little problems with the R.L. like the gritty opening, this could be big news.

So you feel that if Benchmade did buy the rolling lock they will likely shelve it so no one else can use it?

It's an common tactic among other industries.
It happens quite a bit in computer parts. Aureal created sound cards that has better 3D sound performance than the Sound Blaster's EAX systems. But Aureal couldn't fight the Creative giant, and eventually went bankrupt. Although there are other companies that still make cards that are A3D compatiable, I think Creative did purchase Aureal up and had taken A3D version 2, and had adapt them into their EAX 2.
Kinda sad really if Benchmade did that, but I think the rolling lock has quite a bit of problems... if other companies did buy and use it, they would spend a bit of time on the R&D on improving it.

I know the REKAT Rolling Lock inside and out...It's a GREAT design, but REKAT did a poor execution of their design, with a poor linkage to the lock, from (and including) the sliding lock release. I have refined the linkage and locks on all of the REKATs that I own (and have owned), so I KNOW that there can be VAST improvements on the basic design, but I really don't see that happening anytime soon by Benchmade or anyone else in the near future...:(.

I have a pioneer 2 that I got off someone in the forums. Its solid as a tank and I don't see a problem with the rolling rock. I like the axis also but its nice to have choices in the marketplace. Hey glockman99 what did you do to improve the lock, and is the cub you have posted one you improved in this manner/
