Everyone stay safe out there!

Keep your gear ready and accessible. Every area has it's strengths and weaknesses so make sure you are ready for anything.

We have been experiencing power outages here and it reminded me to stay safe. There is nothing like freezing your butt off and not being able to wash your hands that will remind you!

First Aid Kit, Bug Out Bag, Disaster Kit, Water, Heat, Food, a way to stay clean... keep it all!

Good advice, Daniel.
Do you have water close by? When we lose power, I go to the stream and wash like an Indian. It'll make you a man.

There is a creek below my property at the base of the mountain, it is frozen solid though! It is good to have a nearby water source, I have a good filter and iodine plus I can boil it on my wood fired stove. Right now I can melt snow too; I have a huge pot to heat it in.

You are tougher than me bathing in the stream in the winter! Of course here the water is snowmelt so it is cold year round. After seeing your video where you pulled that huge snapper out of the pond I believe it. You rock!

I'd like a hand pump for my well, that way when the power goes out I could still get water. I have a feeling they are not possible here as I have never seen one, the frost line is about 4' deep here so things must be done differently.

My area is harsh survival wise, I have desert only 10 miles south and actual tundra/permafrost year round only 40 miles north. The cool thing is that I can go see snow in the summer or leave my place with 15" of snow now and only 15 miles away it will be snow free. I keep jackets in the car year round as well as an auger, tow lines and a come-along in case I get stuck. We used to go out in the desert a lot looking for jasper in really remote areas. The auger is good in the sand or anywhere there is nothing to attach the tow line/come along to. . I don't off road but the roads here are crazy rough! I always have a knife in the car too of course.

Daniel- Man, you are all set! Great planning. When we moved up here on the Ridge, our neighbor told us right off to be prepared.
That's a great idea with the hand pump for the well. The former owner had a hand pump here but took it with him. We need to set that back up!
You live in such a beautiful place and you are adapting to it just fine.
RockOn!!

Same here, my area is kind of notorious for being rough so I was warned!

Before I moved here they had a really bad outage for a week and a lot of people lost their homes due to broken pipes in the foundations. My road used to connect to the highway from the back and no longer does but the power lines still ran from that direction. The last time they had to snowshoe in over tons of unpacked snow in the wilderness to find the broken line.

My plan is to burn the wood stove if we get a big outage. That will heat my house. To stop my water lines from freezing and breaking I will crawl under the house, cut my well power and wire it to my generator. It will run the pump and I can drip the water so it doesn't freeze.

Whoa!!
Howz your insulation? Do it up broh!
And yea, we love the wood stove! It easily heats the whole house and living next to state forest, we have loads of firewood to boot! We have a Fisher wood stove, you?

My place is OK, I think the shop is better though! lol

I'm not running the wood stove this year for my heating due to having a 9 month old but I do really like it. We split our own wood for the last few years so I am happy with the break!

Not sure on the stove brand, we have it padded with foam right now! Sharp edges at baby head height. It is just tiny and gets cranking hot, with a fan it heats the whole house. I owned a patent pot belly stove along with several others, they are cool. The pot belly wasn't very good really but if you let it draft without checking close the whole stove could get red hot!

I have all the wood I can get and then some with 10 acres of densely forested land. It is almost all evergreens with some scrub oak and aspen. You don't even have to cut the trees here as there are always tons of recent fallen ones. I cut one down a while back that knocked two more down as it fell! I want to thin the woods a bit in places as they trees are too close to each other to really get big... they get really tall fast and then fall early in those spots.

We are backed by National Forest so I can cut there with as permit but it is an all day hike to the top of the mountain where my property stops, my lot is really long and skinny. I think it is mire like 20 acres because it goes straight up!

I know what you mean Daniel. My internet was down for 4 days.Talk about roughing it!I had to read old Blade mags!!!! IT WAS HORORABLE!!!:D
Just joking. I think us city folk have would have it a bit harder in the wake of some disaster or long term power outage.I really need to stock up on things. I do have about a years supply of top ramen :barf: Really, thanks for the post it got me thinking.

fbc- Move to the country yo.
I know!!! I have been trying to talk the wife into it, with no luck so far.One of the reasons I married her was becouse she said she would live in a tree house with me.I guess she just thought we would build this tree house in our freakin backyard!
Daniel- When's the invite?
PARTY AT DANIEL'S PLACE!!!!!!! WOOOO HOOOO

lmao!!! :D

Hey these days that makes things a lot tougher! I pay all of my bills online, etc...

Top Ramen... for some reason I love that stuff but it has to have chili garlic sauce! I didn't eat it for years but for some reason I like it, lol. Bad stuff!

Good idea on the backup food, dried goods can be really inexpensive and go a long ways.

Daniel- When's the invite? :)

Come on by! :D

If I had to live long term survival style I'd move to a tropical or warmer area; much easier to grow food and that sort of thing.

Party!!!! :D

Tree houses are cool, there are some really cool sites on how to build them. I had one as a kid, it was pretty sweet!

lol I told my neighbor I was going to build one here and he told me I'd have the inspectors out in days! I believe it now, I am still dealing with inspection here and I thought I was done. The old homeowners built a 2'x2' rabbit hutch and the code guys came and told them they had to move it 6" to be legal!!! lol Colorado...

I have lived in town a few times but grew up on 60 acres. Austin, TX was a really fun place to live, I enjoyed it besides the traffic. It is super laid back there... I also had too much fun in Lubbock going to school, that place was one big party; at a glance it appears boring but people made up for the lack of scenery, lol! Durango CO was also lots of fun and I went to school there too; now I live nearby. I want to move closer to town, we aren't too far but it is a really bad drive. Hands down the craziest place I have lived is St.Thomas, USVI it is only 14 miles long and is the wildest place around. I can't even begin to describe how nuts that place is. You can get anything you can possibly imagine delivered but it takes a year to get phone service. It is survival style there for sure!

Good stuff staying prepared. I still carry a 72hour kit in my truck from when I was working on foreclosures. I was the unknown property guy, I was the only one who could read a county map and find property markers, so I got sent up into the hills and my work orders would specify "vacant land in unincorporated area of _______" usually some tiny little gold rush town of less than 1000 people. A truck breaking down out there can be a very long hike to any house or road.

Nowadays, if all hell were to break loose I would just head for the islands here. That's my playground, I could live a very reasonable existance out there. Plus I know most of it like the roads here.
