Steak knife gift help

A family friend is a big hunter and he has a lot of deer antlers hanging around his house. For a gift I thought it would be neat to get a set of steak knives made using his antlers for handles. I am having a hard time figuring out whether I should contract a knife maker, or just buy some steak knives from the store and re-do the handles myself (granted, I have no prior handle making experience but it could be a fun project if it is not too complicated.) I live in Michigan if that helps. Any advice would be appreciated.

Since a set implies 4-6 knives I would suggest contracting a knifemaker in your area, that way the blades should be consistent and better quality than store bought, also you can have the steel and design customized. Are you going to discuss your idea with your friend beforehand, or is it supposed to be a surprise? Seems like you should discuss the idea with him first to see if that is something he would like.
