Well I got you to open this thread, I need some help. I have been thinking about a .375 H&H mag for a while. Last weekend I got to shoot a Ruger 77 Safari, and I fell in love. So now, what .375 H&H's do you guys have and shoot--once I get one I will add a pic or two of the rifle and some Busse goodness.

I don't own a .375, but have shot a few. It's a surprisingly mellow round and doesn't kick nearly as badly as most people think it will. But the simple fact is that, unless you're going to Africa sometime soon, it's overkill. A .300 WMR will take down anything on this continent, and kick even less in the process.

Which, of course, isn't going to stop you, so have at it. The Ruger would be my choice. Beautiful gun.

One further thought: You don't scope a DG rifle. It's iron sights all the way.

Yeah, I have thought about it being overkill and all. Doubt I will ever make it to Africa much less Alaska. I want it just because, kinda like keeping a dream going on a major hunt. The .375 H&H can be downloaded to '06 levels so that is good, I reload so that won't be a problem, and probably iron sights until I can afford a 1-4x optic with quick throw rings. Besides 2012, the round will be a 100 years old!

I had a sako 75 ss in 375 H&H and a matching one in 300 wby a few years ago. Great guns, both of them. I even shot some deer with the 375 H&H for fun. If you are staying in NA put a 2-7 scope on it and use it for moose (works excellent on those) and shooting big bears over bait if you're into bear hunting. No reason not to scope it.

If you're going to Africa you have lots of money anyways and will buy a rifle just for the trip I'm guessing. A nice cz in 416 rigby would by my pick.

Cheers

Samael a 300 win mag will kill anything in NA this is true, however if you have to go looking for something that might not be dead in the sticks I have always felt safer with the 375 H&H then I did with the 300 wby. I now use a 35 whelen for those adventures which to me, is perfect.

Agree, the .35 Whelen is a great bush gun. You clearly know what you're doing.

And as far as the scope is concerned, I didn't say don't scope it. I said "you don't scope a DG (dangerous game) rifle." There's a good reason for that. If he's not going to use it as a DG rifle, then he can (and probably will) do whatever the heck he wants.

CZ 550 American Safari Magnum right now is one of my favs in .375 H & H!!!

375 you say a great round and highly accurate. Here's a Brno of mine a 602 model that i had Lon Paul work over some years back. The top one in the pic is the 375 but the lower one is a 7x57 brno made in 1946. The Ruger Rsm is pretty cool though and you can check out the new CZ magnums great wood on their top models.

Very nice. I have looked at the ZC magnum in a catalogue and liked what I saw about a 5th round. I did hold one of the hog backed stocks in 416 Rigby, and I did NOT like it. If I were to go with a CZ Magnum it would need to be the American stock. I have owned several CZ rifles, just not in a middle/large caliber.

I have a line on a barely used Ruger Safari right now that is local for about 500 under the wholesale--he also has a Kimber Cavari, butthat is way too much for me.

Thanks guys, look forward to more on this!

That's a beautiful set, Doug!

I'm assuming those are see-thru rings on the 7x57.

I've got a Kimber of Oregon Model 89 BGR but have not shot it.
I love my Rem 700 classic in .350 Rem Mag toooooo much to change.

Your correct Will, see thru claw mounts i love them the scope is a fixed 4x czech made also. Will you can kind of see the tunnel under the scope . Sound's like a good deal on the Ruger too Sumo275. Check around some of them have really great wood on them also. Thank you all for the compliments.

Doug, Now your talking Bro!!! Outfreaken standing... My toy is a Winchester .458 Safari Mag. and I would like to pick up a .375 H & H. I've been eyeing those CZ for some time now. Fit/finish, accuracy hell all of it, I like it!!!

If I can't work this deal on a Ruger Safari I found, the CZ American will be the one I go after.

Ah, the land of big bad game and big bore rifles. I've come within a whisker of buying a .375 several times--such a versatile round. If I lived where you live, Russ, I'd probably have three! :D

For the hunting I do and could potentially do, a .458 Win Mag and .338 Win Mag cover the upper end. For a scout gun/stopper, I also keep a fun, compact stainless Marlin in 45-70 sighted in with Buffalo Bore 405 gr. semi-jacketed flat-nose rounds @ 2000 fps, yielding about 3500 ft. lbs at the muzzle. It was built by Marlin based on what I understand had become a very popular bush-pilot set-up in your neck of the woods, Russ. I keep it around for bear encounters, as well as an old 12 ga. Mossberg pump w/slugs. Here's the Marlin:

IMO it's hard to beat a Model 70. I have had a Ruger No. 1 in .375 H&H, but now have two to bracket it, a Model 70 in .416 Rem. Mag. (wood stock on the bottom) and a .35 Whelen Ackley Improved Custom on an Interarms Mark X action. Both have 24" bbls. and controlled round feed bolts.

As both the .375 and .416 are fully capable of 300 yd shots, a low to medium powered variable scope is very suitable. PHs carry iron sights only, but they also only shoot if the animal is very close. The paying hunter doesn't always have that luxury.

Will,
We follow the same lines Brother!!! I had a Win. 70 .338 and I sold it back in 1992. That was the BIGGEST mistake I have made gun wise. Still have my .458 just like yours and I also have a .45-70 Marlin for up close and personal up here. Mossberg 500 is another I keep laying around. so GOOD pea shoots Brother... Nice pics by the way!!!

Will that's some beautiful wood on those model 70's. The only model 70 i have right now is this 1951 vintage 3006 next to an early model 88 in 308. Sounds like you and Russ need to get together for some big bore blasting. Russ thanks brother for the compliments i do love the brnos great guns as you know.

ExTREMEly nice pre-64 M70, Doug. Looks to be in really nice shape. That M88 Winchester had a lot going for it--just never caught on with the M94 look-alike crowd, I guess. But with the clip feed and spitzer bullets a significant improvement in performance. For years my mother harvested at least a buck a year with a Model 100 built on that same platform but semi-auto in .284 Winchester--compact and no lightweight, but the recoil was negligible--a pleasure to shoot and very impressive ballistics.
