New Jersey Steel Baron finally got there new website up. Now they have heat treat protocols on the site. I'm not saying that they are right for the condition there steel is in but they have them on there now. I could be wrong but I never saw them on there old site.

It's nice to see website improvements. They also added heat analysis information.

I checked their site and they do not have information on W-2 steel. At least I could not get it.

The W-2 was a big issue, maybe they are still working on that one

They do. This is what there site says on W2
"
Once discontinued and as rare as hen’s teeth, NJSB has brought it out of retirement and now the sole provider of current production W-2.

Our W2 is specifically, specially formulated for easy working and reliable, repeatable results that show in performance time and again.

THE steel for hamons, while it can be tricky learning how to do, our W-2 is known for producing differential hardening effects, unlike any other steel.

The combination of High carbon and simple alloying means that, even though it requires a fast quench oil, and seasoned, experienced maker, with time and patience, will soon find themselves falling in love with our W-2 time after time; and why it is particularly so highly sought after for large blades or swords right down to the simplest kiridashi or paring knife.

Once you have your methods nailed down, you’ll find yourself reaching for it any time you need a piece of steel to make a keen, mean, cutting machine that is a simple joy to use."

They have a section where they tell how to heat treat the steel they sell. They list all their steel like 15N20, etc. I can get the heat treat process for 15N20 and some of the other steels, but When I click on the W-2 item, nothing comes up.

OK, I found the data for W-2. They have a site called "Heat treating data" Where they tell how to heat treat all their steels, but the W-2 link on that site does not work.
They do have the heat treat formula for W-2 where they list the different sizes of W-2.

Yes, very repeatable. Using the HT/normalization procedure that they wanted used on about 20 coupons after reading of the W2 issues (I believe it was 1750 20mins, 1550 20 mins, no subcritical, then 1500 quench in p50) I was consistently getting mid 30s. When I contacted them, they agreed to replace about half of what I had as some had been bought a couple years back to have in case W2 disappeared again. Havent tried doing any high temp normalizing yet (1800*+) to see what would happen. Very disappointed as in the past I have exclusively purchased my steel from NJSB. Not anymore

Here is the direct link to their W2 heat treating info: "FIND OUR SUGGESTED W-2 HEAT TREAT HERE"

That and the other carbon & tool steels like 52100 all seem to be a very basic heat treating protocol without taking into account the highly annealed state of those steels. Unfortunately, I don't think that will help out the stock removal makers too much. Maybe they are still trying to get everything up and running the way they want it on the site and have just put up some preliminary info??

BTW, I've always wondered why they list W1 as a steel they carry when I've never once seen them have any size or shape stock available. Anybody happen to know what's up with that? lol Thanks

I know it’s frowned upon but it’s the first thing that popped into my mind.
