Steel Combinations for Damascus?

Hey folks, I've been doing stock removal for several years. Anyway, I was over in Garden City, Id for the 4th of July and visited Rob and Dick Patton, and they were kind enough to let me forge my first knife. Needless to say I'm hooked, have a forge on the way, stumbled onto a kiln and so on. My question is: I have tons of mine saws from the local area that are pretty thin, several Ice Saws (1/8" thick) from the Ice House days, some heavy link chain made for rock crushers, and many Mill cicular saws. All of which are of L6. What would be a good secondary metal to mix with the L6, and what are the percentages(ratio)? Any comments would be helpful. Thanks, Knifeman

I Like L-6 and 1095 also!! L-6 and 1084 goes well. I think L-6 and 10anything is good!! Have fun!!

Try L-6 and 1018, a bit hard to stick but gives nice contrast. Mix a bit of wrought iron with it and you get intresting paterns.

L6 And 1075 or 1084 go great together . It is a forgiving mixture as for heat treat and cracking problems..
Koval has short stock in 1/8 1084 and 1095 if your looking for small sections...

Thanks for all the info on different steels to mix with the L6. Looking forward to tying some of these combinations. I appreciate the help.
