Hey guys how are yah

It's just currently my search button is not working i'm not sure why, but i had a question i wanted to get some help on.

I am very new to knives, and do not know much about the different steels out there.

I wanted to find out what would be the best type of steel for about a 4-7inch blade, and money is not an expense since it is for a friend.

Is there a reference guide currently anywhere that lists all the good steels out there.
take care

aj

What is the intended use for the knife? It will be a lot easier to narrow it down if we know what the intended use is. There are tons of places to find info on different steels. Try doing a regular internet search using the words "knife steel FAQs".

It sounds like its going to be a camp knife, right? D2 is part tool steel, part stainless. All around good steel, but the link Esav posted is very informative too.

Actually that may not help a newbie. For a camp knife a good carbon steel like D2 or A2 would serve you well.

hey guys i appreciate the help.

The friend of mine is sikh and is hoping to get a custom made kirpan(Keerpan). This is basically a very holy object that is carried by Sikhs that have taken an oath. My friend wants this knife to be the best since he knows this will be his only knife till he dies. He said he doesn't mind spending the money since this is something that should last him forever. The main part of this is EDC, but only to be used when absolutely necessary. He will carry it forever, but only use it in a life or death situation.

I hope this helps, and if you have anymore questions just let me know.
www.khalsakirpans.com It has some models of kirpans that you can check made by a wicked knife maker.

This is kind of a conicedence as I was researching Sihk's yesterday.
There are 5 things they carry as part of the oath like a iron bracelet ,a comb and special underwear. They had an amazing battle in british service in the late 1800's that is compared to Thermapole (the movie 300 is about Thremople)
The was fought with the same afgan tribesmen as the canadians and Brits and now some US soldiers are fighting now.

The thing I like best about the sihks is the oath to act honerable and treat people with respect. I think more people should take an oath like that.
OK I like the knives better. I have seen a custom Kirpan ,I belive it was on the Same site that sells Keatings Crossada.

I would choose some type of tool steel for sure like M2 or L6.

The ABSOLUTE best steel for a 4"-7" blade is: 1095. If not that, then The ABSOLUTE best steel is D2. If not that, then The ABSOLUTE best steel is M2 or A2. If not that, then The ABSOLUTE best steel is 440C. If not that, then The ABSOLUTE best steel is S30V. If not that, then The ABSOLUTE best steel is 154CM. If not that, then The ABSOLUTE best steel is..........

On second thought, there is none. They're all good. I would say get the knife that is made (aside from the type of steel) to the quality you will accept.... and the steel that that particular knife is made out of will be the Absolute best steel.
