just heat treated a blade tonight (cable hunter)
i got to get a vid of the steel at aust temp looks all trippy in the kiln
yes simple things for simple people but it was the first blade i did without foil around it

Cool. I still haven't managed to have conditions right for me to observe decalescence while HT'ing. I'm hoping that the new shop will allow for better light control and the gas forge better heat control so I'll be able to catch the "shadow"....

This world is nothing but a dance of shadows.

A line drawn between darkness and light.

Learn to read this subtle line,

For it tells all the secrets of creation.

Man Fitzo....Let me be the forst one on BF to tell you how well rounded you are that isn't joking about your midsection! :)

Excellent quote.

I came across that quote accidentally searching for something unrelated to knives on the 'net a few years ago. I thought it was cool to find something applicable to bladesmithing when it had nothing to do with that at all. I copied it down and made a little printout to hang on the wall of my shop.

I'm glad you liked the quote. :)

Nanc and I were remembering last night the first time we saw the "Dance of Shadows". The memory is still clear even though it was almost 20 years ago. I can still picture us in the glow of the forge in the otherwise total dark of Tim Zowada's shop as I did my first HT ever with a forge. I had always used a furnace. The intensity of Tim's description as it proceeded and the focus of the moment made it an experience we will probably always be able to remember with exquisite clarity. Those were special times for us as we were intiiated into some of the "mysteries" of steel. I very much enjoy hearing that same awe in the words of the newer guys as they experience some of these things for the first time, too. Those shadows connect us somehow to the distant past when Man first discovered what this mighty metal could do and learned how to manipulate it's "magic". Makes ya all mystical and squishy feeling, don't it? :)

50 years ago,I would sit at the campfire (now days at the fireplace) and watch the fairy dance as the coals reached the perfect point. I still love it!

I got to agree... I never tire of watching those shadows revealing the magic held within!
O....And I like lighting the forge too.....Flame On.

It is an interesting paradox that one of our most primal fears is also one of our most primal comforts. The heat of fire is so woven throughout our development as a species.

I agree, Stacy, about the campfires. One of our most-missed parts of deer camp. One of our real regrets in our home is that we have no fireplace. My sis gave us a chiminea (sp?) that I need to assemble so we can enjoy a little fire out back next year.

I have always wished I could get to where I could watch a lava flow. It's entrancing to watch shadows move in the very mix of earth and fire itself.

New joint venture -
This Saturday night we all build a fire (fireplace, bond fire, chimenea, forge, whatever) and spend time watching the embers (preferably with someone else).

Don't forget to make s'mores everybody! :D

Actually what I'll probably do is do dinner in the fireplace. We've got a couple "mountain pie makers" that need to be broken out...it's gettin' to be fire season! (not that it feels like it @ 65 degrees and rainy today....bleah)

I agree! No wisecracks here, I wouldn't want a big mean looking hammer swinging feller such as you out of sorts and knocking on my door!

You got that right, John! Shufflin' along at about a 1/4 MPH, me and my cane make for one dangerous hombre. If I can make it up the steps, and there's a railing I can hold onto while I swing, I pose a helluva threat!

That threat being, of course, that when I fall over as I swing, I land on the assaulted party and smother them because I can't get up! ;)

It's almost 6:45, I'm laying with my pups and the woman in front of the fire, as promised.

To all of you, gentlemen!

Is maith an scathan suil charad.
