I want to make a meat cleaver for my dad and I'm having a hard time sourcing steel. I was thinking about going with 3/16" O1 and I need the bar to be at least 4" wide. Any ideas of where to find this? I've checked my normal steel suppliers with no luck. Thanks guys.

You might call Aldo at New Jersey Steel Barron, and see if he has any. I know he carries odd sized thing sometimes... it’s not on the website, so if you just look there and don’t call you won’t know for sure...

Here’s the website:

I already called Aldo. They don't have any in stock, and don't know when they will have more.
Thanks onespdfrk I'll check them out.

What is he cutting with it?
3/16 is fine if he is breaking down whole birds or chops. If he is just chopping BBQ or veggies, then it doesn't need to be as thick.

52100 will work for a cleaver. - 48" of 4" wide by 3/16" thick is only $68 from Aldo. 1095 is $63 for the same size bar.

If it's use is solely for BBQ you may want to consider a Chinese duck knife pattern. 2-inch height. Just a thought.

I found a piece of 5/32" thick 4" wide 01 at usaknifemaker. It was their last piece! Thanks guys.

I made 2 separate 3" wide cleavers out of 0.25" 80CRV2 (one chisel edge single bevel, one double bevel) for someone I work with. He uses the double bevel like an axe for carcasses and the single bevel in the kitchen for everything else. Of the 2, the chisel edge single bevel is by far his favorite due to how well it slices.

Pardon the rough look, as I was even more of a newbie then than I am now.

He's most likely only going to be using it for bbq. I'm sure 5/32" would be fine, but I'd prefer to use O1 since I've worked with it several times in the past.

I couldn't find any listed here http://sb-specialty-metals.com/shop/ Sam Dean Sam Dean

Jarrett Fleming Jarrett Fleming Glad you found something that will work!

Their website is kinda funny. If you search for "O1", it pulls up 30 sizes they have in stock, but it only displays 10 at a time. Have to hit "next" in the lower right to see the rest. It's $56.46 for a 3/16 X 4 X 36 piece.

Ah I see now. I was entering 01 in the wrong search bar. They have good prices thanks for letting me know about them.
