Hey all,
I'm gonna start working on a dagger soon and it's going to have steel pommel, my question is, can I use mild steel? (FYI I'll be using 15n20 for the blade) Obviously I can, but I'm worried it's gonna have a slightly different appearance from the blade once I'm done hand sanding (AKA more matte since it's softer and the abrasive will dig in deeper, kind of like when you sand steel that still has decarb on it), or am I just being a drama queen? (For this build I'm trying to make everything as perfect as I can) I'm kind of wondering if I should use something like 1045 or maybe even a stainless like 410.
Any advice is apricated!

Thank you for the responses!
Well I'd love to use 416 (Or 410) but I cannot for the life of me find 1.25"x1.25" square bar of a short length, 4"-5" would be all I need. And I don't really want to spend over $100 on a whole foot of it right now when I just need a small piece. Anyone know where I could get the above dimensions?

If I might ask, please, where can one purchase 1.25" square 416 bar by the foot? My old sources are gone. Thank you.

Online metals has 416 round rod in 1.25, 1.5, 1.75 etc. The 1.25 is about $50 per foot. I have a few sizes and have squared them up when needed, or used them round when convenient.

Idk how your design is, but aluminum is maybe an option?
Also might not throw off the balance?
