Can stainless steel be used as a stiker with flint, or can only high carbon steel be used?

When you say flint, do you mean the natural stone or the man-made "flint" which is used in lighters. The man-made stuff just needs to be scraped with a sharp object - carbon, stainless, even glass. I don't know about the natural stuff and can't tell it from chert.

For striking against a natural flint, chert, quartz or any other piece of stone that`ll leave a sharp-ish edge after being struck hard, you need high-carbon steel.
I`ve even gotten sparks from granite, and other stones. Aslong as it`s a bit rough, and with a somewhat rough edge, it can be used. (But only with carbon steel.)

Thanks. I have a knife I had to engrave numbers in the stainless steel bolster, and now that I am not on the military base anymore, I used the sengraving tool to scratch out the I.D. Number. I had time so I basically turned it into a rasp. I thought I could use it as a flint / steel fire starter, but I guess not. It is good enough to sharpen bone on though.
