My parents will be celebrating their 40th wedding anniversery soon, and we are having a "surprise" party for them with a large cake and such. I'd like to make a cake-cutting knife for them. Any suggestions on type of steel to use for the blade? Need something that can be engraved well.

my jewler friend had to get special tools to engrave it because it was allready heat treated....

Thanks -- what kind of heat-treat would a thin-bladed cakecutter need?

I have always sent mine to Paul Bos. 440C is flexible in thin blades, like any other steel. I have thin blades done the same as thick, and never had a problem. HRC58-59. Although, if it is really thin, maybe a point or so less would be in order.

Id say a ATS-34 machete may do the job a tactical wedding knife is the only way to go ;)

I just did a cake server for a friends wedding. It was Ti and zebrawood. More of a spatula than a knife, but it could still cut cake really well. Would have failed on the 2x4 though.

since it is just cake i would use a non harden 300 or 400 SS. the engraving will show very easily and just about any trophy shop can do the engraving.

440C is the vote here. Texas Knifemakers has some 2 inch wide stuff that is about .180~.220 thick. They sell them in 3 foot sections. Heck, if you are interested, let me know what you need, I have some in the shop.
