Anyone recommend a lockable steel gun cabinet for knife storage? Due to structural concerns, and the prospect of carrying it up two flights of stairs, I am not interested in a heavy fire safe. ;)

I've been seeing these Stack-On cabinets at some of the local sporting good stores. I assume they can be bolted to the floor / wall. They have some sort of locking mechanism, and are available in a few different sizes and configurations. Are they worth the money? Is it difficult to gut the factory interiors to make space for custom shelves?

Recommend a different brand or different style of cabinet?

The vertical cabinets like you show are reasonable for simple teenage "smash and grab" theft protection. They are also good for keeping kids out of your collection.

The construction boxes you see at job sites are more break-in resistant but, are generally a chest. I'm considering using one with a blanket on top or television in a living area. I bought a shotgun once from a guy in a really nice house that had a DeWalt job-box in his personal "entertainment' room. It really was a pretty slick setup with the cloth cover. I have moved these empty by myself but, they really are a two person move since they are ackward to handle by yourself.

Honestly a locking file cabinet like a HON or some other top brand will offer as much or more protection. I had a Stack On or some braand of gun cabinet that I modded to keep ammo in and semi secure. I believe anyone with a hatchet could get into one.

Maybe one of the larger fire proof safes for documents available at Wally World or Sam's?? Depends on the number and size of knives you have I guess.

I have a Stack-On rifle cabinet with a hand gun locker bolted on top of it. It keeps the kids out but that's about it. Mine are older, so they have no "fancy" interior. But they did come with a couple of shelves which I installed.
I also have a Rigid tool chest that I use for a truck box. I'd have a harder time breaking into the truck box than the gun cabinet.

You can also find stand up job boxes.

Thanks for the ideas about the job-site boxes. I'll look into them.

Well, in total there are 450 knives, many of them large fixed blades in their original boxes. But this particular cabinet is intended for a small sub-collection of 100+ Old Timers, their boxes and accessories, and related items. Something the size of those double-door gun cabinets will be sufficient I think, as long as there's a way to add shelves.

No way a fire safe of sufficient size is going to work in this old house. First off, it'd be too large and heavy to fit up the narrow steep stairs. Secondly, it would fall though the floor. Then then the next floor. Then the next floor. And come to rest in the basement.

I have a Stack-On like shown in the OP..gift from my kids. OK for years but had a locking mechanism failure..opened with a CUT-OFF wheel in lieu of key...that WAS the Stack-On work around. Repaired with a heavy hasp and padlock.

Stack On fine for preventing a smash and grab and guns out of the hands of uninvited guests but that is as far as this owner would go.

I'm not mechanically inclined however CUT OFF wheels can do some serious cutting.
