I just ad my first experience working on a steel-handled Spydie; it was very enjoyable and I was pleased with the results. I'm thinking I should have started working on these long ago. So, with that in mind:

What grade of steel are the handle scales on steel-handled Spydies?

What hardness?

I know they file pretty easily, but I'm curious about tapping them. I have bad luck with small taps...

Well, Drew may be pleased with the results of his work on that SS Spydie, but I'm VERY pleased, as it's my knife! Thanks, Drew! I'm beginning to feel that the SS handled Spydies are the perfect "project" knives, as they leave the door open for improvisation. Spyderco supplies us with the quality knife, and the consumer customizes to his/her satifaction. There can be many ways to customize the SS handle to one's liking. I had Drew put thumb notches on top of the "hump" above the opening hole, and some notches for the forefinger in the handle. He also put some diagonal grooves on the sides of the handle. The knife is a 3/4 size SS Jess Horn. I may have to get additional SS knives in the future for different types of customization!
