I am thinking of buying my son (a Marine) a Steel Heart E. I have many knives and as a Police trainer and special response team member, I use various ones. I have never held a Busse, but I listen to friends and read and have narrowed my purchace to the Busse or an ICC Mod. 5A. Any suggestions, etc. ? I want a knife that will not fail.

Thanks,

ED

Ed,
First off, welcome to the Forums. Glad you stopped by. :)
Thank your son, for me, for his service to our country.

You came to the right place. Busse Knives are indestructible, and even if by some chance the knife does get damaged, the Busse Warranty will cover you, no matter what.

I will let some of the others address your questions about which knife, but any Busse will serve him well.

Also call the shop to order, 419-923-6471, they have a discount for military personel.

Thanks, Eric. I have been in contact with the company and had actually made up my mind to call and order the knife when I got home today but I guess they had already closed. That's when I started checking the web for prices and found this forum. Can't believe the way I like knives I never knew it existed. I also appreciate Busse's commitment to our Country and it Armed Services. I think this is one reason I decided to buy from them. Is it better to buy direct or from a regular dealer? BTW, anyone got a Satin Jack they want to sell? That thing is sweeeet!

Ed,
They were probably closed today because of either the Ice Storm that hit Ohio yesterday. Or the SHOT show in Las Vegas this weekend.

The Ice Storm knocked their power out and Jerry didn't think it would be back on for a few days.

You can either buy from them directly or from a dealer. Cost will be the same no matter where you buy it. If you need one right away you can check the for sale forums here on BF, there is actually a BM-E and SH-E for sale there now. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=30&forumid=746
These are individuals selling their knives so you won't get the military discount.

If you like looking at knives check out the Picture Archive at the top of this forum for some of ours.

Welcome Ed.

For your son, the Marine, he may find the Satin Jack similar in use profile, albeit far superior, to the Ka-Bar. Next choice for the "improvise the tool at hand" grunt would be the natural outlaw.

Go to http://www.bussecombat.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi Check out the dealers post in the show forum and contact them via email. If deployment is a factor, these dealers may have the choosen knife ready-to-ship.

May your Son, be safe in all his duties.

Lt. Longshore,

I am usually a lurker here but I wanted to offer a little encouragement. Busse makes THE best knives out there. Not only are they comfortable under heavy use (and lets not forget abuse) they are well made and attractive in a very utilitarian sort of way. I have three thus far (and probably more soon) and all of them get used. My Basic 9 (similar to the Battle Mistress) has seen more abuse than use and is probably my favorite workhorse blade. After a summer of heavy yardwork (digging out small trees and large shrubs, cutting through roots I didn't want to dig miles to remove, knocking it against some huge rock) it is still in good condition. The coating is marred all over but it is intact. Even better, I remove three large dents in the blade and got it razor sharp in less than half an hour (I dropped the sheath, rubbed my knuckle against the blade and when I sheathed it I noticed blood trickling down my hand - how did that happen?). I cannot rave enough. If you are gonna treat your son how about a good service blade for you too? The Satin Jack is a nice every day carrying blade with a lot of utility. :)

Best wishes,
Jeff

P.S. There are a lot of great guys here willing to help you locate knives if you need some help (thanks again Andre!)

Welcome to the forum, he is going to love the Steel Heart :) Don't worry about it failing him. A Busse knife will never let it's owner down...never!! :D

Welcome to the forums, Ed. I am sure the Steel Heart will
serve your son well. It won't let him down!!! Thanks to
you and your son for your service to our communities and
our country!!!:)

Ed,depending on your sons area of operations I would recommend the Satin Jack. The reason I say this is because I have carried and used this knife extensively with great results.I use my knife in a woody enviroment which lends to chopping and skinning and fileting. However it is more likely due to current circumstances that your son will be in a desert enviroment with little chopping, but more rope cutting, prying, digging or other various chores.I would reccomend the SJ or the NO also for concealability. Not knocking the SH it to would work great in any of these aspects, but the longer length may not be warranted especially if he will be seated for extended periods of time in humvees or tanks or personnel carriers. These are just some thoughts.

If I myself were going over there and could take any knife, it would be either the Steel Heart or the Satin Jack.
Infact I would take them both.
Coupled with a lare Sebbenza and your set.:)

Okay guys, thanks for all the response, but now I'm really confused. Some of you say the SH/E, some the SJ, and others the NO. Considering the load bearing vest and other equipment, would the SH/E be too big. My son is going into Crash/Fire & Rescue, so would the chopping power of the SH/E belay the lager size. Geez, I thought I had this figured out...

Ed,

Gotta apologize here, we get so excited about these knives that we often get carried away. Let me throw some numbers at you real quick.

Satin Jack: blade=6" oal=11.25" weight=11oz
Natural Outlaw: blade=6" oal=11.5" weight=17oz
Steel Heart: blade=7.5" oal=13" weight=19oz

If the ability to chop and use the skull crusher are going to be of use then cross off the Satin Jack, not the greatest chopper but a good utility blade. There is an inch and a half of blade length difference and only 2oz between the Natural Outlaw and the larger Steel Heart. If concealability isn't an issue get the Steel Heart. I can wear my Satin Jack all day long and no one can tell I've got it (the Natural Outlaw is about the same size but heavier). I hope this helps. Thanks for clarifying the sort of tasks he might need his knife for, we could definately narrow it down more if we knew his heigh/weight :)

Regards,
Jeff

Thanks again. My son is about 5-10, lean at about 150 (he runs like a demon, about 5 miles/day). I've narrowed it down to the SH/E and th NO (think I'll have to get the SJ for me!)

ED:D

"(think I'll have to get the SJ for me!)"

That's a fantastic idea Ed:D

One thing you'll find when you call the shop to order for your son (and yourself;)) is that Jerry and staff are more than willing to talk about your sons needs and may even have some opinions of what seems to be the most popular or suitable among those in the service. They do after all provide a lot of blades to the military and would know their demands a little better:D

With that all said, the SH is an excellent all around user (my favorite;)). Accompanied by a SAK or heavy duty 2.5-3.5" folding blade, he will be set for just about anything. If your concerned about size and gear interference, the SJ, or NO would certainly be compact enough for fire/rescue work.
...AND, not meant to confuse you more, but you might look at the Badger Attack too:cool:

Good luck Ed, and give your son our best:)

Okay guys, I called Busse today and ordered the NO. As you guys stated, they were extremely helpful trying to figure out my son's needs. After talking with them, I did order the NO, the rep was afraid that the SE would be too large for carry on the belt. I ordered the extra sheath with the tec-lok. The nice thing is that if I get the knife and it's not exactly what I want, she said I can return it and get the larger knife. What a great bunch of people. Now I just gotta save up for the Satin Jack!:) Thanks for all of you guys help.
